Dominant Hand Swap

Hi fellow Hiveians,

Today I wanted to chat about the little mental experiment I've been undergoing!

Dominant Hand Swap

I recently had an experience that I've done before but let it go off to the wayside but I made it a point to do it again. I switched up doing things with my other hand!

IMG_1789.jpg

I recently had a fun experience with poison ivy, one that I will write about in a different post but what happened was that it got on my forearm of my dominant hand. This meant that I had to keep that arm lotioned up, loaded with all kinds of stuff and just generally not in optimal use. That meant that some things that I was doing such as eating and brushing my teeth really weren't in the easiest way possible! What did I do? I just switched up the hand I was using for most things!

It's an interesting thing where we don't really think of something as simple as just doing something with another body part, even though for the most part we have two. For example, just eating with a fork or spoon on your non-dominant hand instead of your normal dominant hand. The first few times you do it, it feels awkward and just wrong. It's incredible and funny how something so simple causes our bodies to feel so out of place! It definitely goes to human nature where we prefer things to be consistent and our brains are very efficient and do things without thinking much.

IMG_1722.jpg

The experience with getting my dominant arm jacked up with the stuff was actually a really good one. I performed a similar experiment a few years ago where I spent an entire month or so using my non-dominant hand to do most things like brushing my teeth, eating with a fork or spoon and yes I will also admit even though people might not want to admit it: wiping your ass! Lol. It's definitely challenging doing the dirty business of wiping your ass with your non-dominant hand, almost to the point where you consider just sucking up whatever the issue is with the dominant one so you can do it. I was determined though to not fall back into complacency and I made sure to do it.

I think I came out a much different person and it was a very simple and straight forward thing that almost every person can do if they want to. I enjoyed it because it changed the wiring of my brain a little bit and it made me think a lot more of what I was doing instead of letting my subconscious just dictate the normal routine so that my active brain can focus on something else.

IMG_1612.jpg

I think it's important to change up every day routines like this for no other fact other than just to test our bodies and our brains. Our brains improve itself when we do and learn things like this, it increases the various folds up there and these days where things are often spoon fed to us and everything is in a pattern and routine, I think it's incredibly important to break that routine so that we can make very minor improvements to our bodies and lives. Yes it may not really be that big of a deal to most but if it's not a big deal, why not give it a try and see how challenging it can be?! I certainly had the thought in the beginning that it would be simple and it turned out to not be so simple lol.

The one thing that I want to do and get better at in this current process is getting better at writing with my non-dominant hand! That one is a lot harder but I know with practice we can become efficient at it just like we can if we brush our teeth or eat with the opposite hand. I don't have the best penmanship as it is but I know that I want to at least work through my signature with the opposite hand, because I know I'm certainly going to encounter a situation in the future where I get a fish hook in my hand or something and it gets bandaged up hahaha. Can't hurt to try when the pressure is off, instead of only when the pressure is on!

Just out of curiosity why did you vote to support a Hive DHF proposal to pay someone to "onboard" new members to Hive when the user making the proposal has already made it clear that they don't care about the quality of the users they "onboard" and one of the accounts "onboarded" as an example has already been proven to be a sockpuppet account posting 100% AI generated content? The user making the proposal @lasseehlers has a negative reputation score of -12 on Hive and has made posts expressing disdain for Hive.

You understand that the proposal lacks transparency, right? The proposal insists that you trust that @lasseehlers "onboards real users" without proving the users are real or that the users won't just post once and become inactive never to be seen again.

The proposal states that each new "real user" @lasseehlers "onboards" costs the DHF fund 20 HBD each, 16 HBD to onboard each new user (@lasseehlers refuses to explain why or how it costs 16 HBD) and 4 HBD for each "real user" goes to @lasseehlers' pocket. This means that if @lasseehlers recruits a "real user" he only gets 4 HBD but if he creates a fake sockpuppet account he gets the whole 20 HBD for creating a fake account on Hive.

I've written a post explaining why the proposal you have voted to support is terrible:

You are free to support any proposal of course but I was wondering why you would support that.

Sounds like I will be removing support for it. I don’t go to the proposals often and only went there to originally support leo. I was being lazy and reading the titles without doing any digging. Thanks for being on top of it and keeping me on track!

Thank you. The proposal title is questionably misleading. Whether or not that was intentional only @lasseehlers knows for certain.

Looks like an issue removing a vote on PeakD

Wait, I do this perfectly with my non-dominant hand 😄 Writing is the hardest, it's too stressful and slow.

Hahah well I'm glad you find writing harder than wiping! I think I'm better at writing but I'll get better at the other in time lol

(Edited)

I sensed the sympathy.

The husband of a friend of Pura said juggling. He juggles. How weird is that, though? I've never met a juggler before him.

That's what he was saying. Practice juggling and, before you know it, you're swinging both ways.

Yeah I can see that! Juggling is hard but that's got a heck of a lot of hand eye coordination and your body gets used to the direction going to both hands not just dominant hand.

I've tried brushing my teeth with my left hand and it feels so weird, I can do it, but if I try to go at a normal speed I end up whacking myself haha

Poisen ivey man, that doesn't sound fun. I don't think we have it over here in Ireland, but I avoid ivey anyway, just in case.

I laughed so much when you mentioned wiping with your non-dominant hand. !LOLZ

I'm going to give it a go for the fun of, and just for the general experiment. One thing I can't do is write with my left hand, now, my writing in general is sloppy, but with my other hand it's just bare scribbles.

Yeah these are pretty good things to just give a try! Slow down with it and you'll get better and eventually be able to compete with your dominant hand when it comes to speed!

The best thing to do so you can get better at it is continuous practice and I wish you well

Yeah that's for sure! Practice makes perfect :D

Great inspiring topic you wrote @cmplxty.
I would call it more as leaving our comfort zone.
It is a good practice I believe.

It is indeed leaving our comfort zone! It's important to do that though, it has a significant range of benefits!

I will also admit even though people might not want to admit it: wiping your ass!

Exactly @cmplxty !

I remember one time, that I had a cut in my dominant hand, and had to have a bandage covering a big part of my right palm, and to do this action "ass wiping" I struggle so much with it! And I'm one person that uses the bidet for the perfect cleaning achievement of the area! It was so freaking frustrating... I felt like I was in my first biology class trying to adjust the microscope stage with the the stage controls! Ahahaha

Hahaha yeah me too dude. Someone opened a door at work and I was behind it and somehow with weird hand motion near the handle I ended up getting my palm sliced on the apparently incredibly sharp teeth to the door or whatever they are called. I know the struggle with a palm injury lol.

We don’t have bidets here but I used it in Italy and I loved it! Gave your ass a nice fresh feel to it lol when we get a house I want to put one in the master bathroom that would be nice!

Ahaha A laugh so much about your bidet placement consideration for our master bathroom of your future house! I fell like an alien or outsider 👽 in Portugal, because now bidets are becoming more like a "extra" ceramic bowl... and many house owner's, are taking them off to gain extra space in the bathroom. So my opinion is absolutely the "odd" one! 😅😅

I'm a very immature person; seeing just the post title and the Self Improvement community led me down a road that is probably best served by other, more adult communities. Oy.

Lol. It's definitely challenging doing the dirty business of wiping your ass with your non-dominant hand,

A bidet! It's not a way out; it's the right tool for the right job! 😂

Dude, I hope you get better soon. Despite the levity of your post, I'm sure you're pretty uncomfortable right now.

When I was younger, I tried practicing to write through my left hand but I could only write strokes. I find it comfortable to use my right hand though. I hope you are well my friend. Best regards and have a great time!
