Weekly Science And Technology Reports - February 26 2023
Hello everyone, did you guys miss me ?
Well, i did miss everyone, including myself. 😂
Ok, shall we begin with the reports ?
In the absence of no response except mine, we begin.
Harnessing plant molecules to harvest solar energy
Current solar panels are made up of photovoltaic cells and each cell is made from mostly semiconductors - the bedrock of some modern and very important electronic components like transistors and ICs. But there are problems involved with using this semiconductor solar panels, one of them being that it isn't efficient enough, about 20% of the the energy received from the sun is converted to electricity. To get more electricity out of such kind of panels, you would need to make it bigger, thus consuming a lot of space. However, it happens that our brother in the sphere of the "living" may hold the key to designing a more efficient solar panels, which could also take lesser space. Looks like there's a lot more to learn and harness from biological systems, and it makes me wonder how nature achieved such incredible feats without a brain behind it. 🤔
However, keep reading to find out more.
Hauling icebergs to Africa: could a bizarre plan to get drinking water actually work?
Looks like the processes of getting water into our homes maybe more complicated than we actually realize - depending on your region. For those living in areas plagued by drought, there seems to be another way of getting freshwater, we may have now gone past hunting aquatic animals, we've gotten to the point where we now hunt icebergs. 😂
It's believed that most of the fresh water on our planet is locked in icebergs, located in the polar regions of our planet (the cooler part). The idea, is transporting icebergs from the poles to regions where fresh water is needed. Though it may seem absurd considering how large and heavy icebergs are - expenses, it has other advantages, like reducing the rise of ocean levels that maybe caused by global warming. Looks like I'm revealing too much 🤐. Keep reading to find out more.
Superior to Human Skin: Scientists Have Artificial Skin With Incredible Sensing Capabilities
So, imagine later you got blind (you could see before) and you were presented with different materials to identify, that wouldn't be hard, your sense of touch could help. You can tell if the object is liquid or solid, you can tell the kind of cloth material, e.t.c.
This is partly possible because your skin gets in contact with the material but what about being able to identify the object without your skin getting in contact with the object in question ? - it could be close to the object.
Well, that's what this report is all about, Scientists have created an artificial skin that can be used to identify an object without having to touch it, though the skin has to be close to the object. If you wish to know more, then slide in here.
Your brain could be controlling how sick you get — and how you recover
Most of the time when we are sick, probably from an infection, we often think that the organism responsible for the infection has a hand in the symptoms. Well, that's not totally true, it's your immune response that's actually responsible for the symptoms but there seems to be more. In this report, it has been shown that sometimes, your brain can play tricks on you - like your symptoms appearing more severe than that of another person having the same disease and symptoms. In other words, it's possible for your immune response to be triggered without having any infection - you can develop symptoms of a disease without actually having the causative organism. 😳
What this also means is that some diseases can be cured by the brain itself - that's amazing. But the question is, how ?
If you wish to know more, then keep reading here. And not to forget, this research seems to support the placebo effect. 😉
The Power of a Negative Mood: How It Enhances Analytical Thinking
Nobody likes to be in a bad mood and we express it in different ways. For some, it could be in the form of anger and you could hurt people, it could be in the form of sadness and your spirit down. Well, those are the downsides of being in a bad mood but what if i told you there's also a good side of being in a bad mood, that you could evaluate things more better or spot errors at such state. Would you believe me ?
Well, if you don't, then check yourself again when you are in such mood or see here for more details. So, the next time you get a proofreading job, don't forget to provoke yourself and thank me later. 😂
It is here we conclude today's report, have a thoughtful day and till i come your way again next week. Happy successful elections in advance, my fellow Nigerians.
