Easter week begins with an important religious event, the nocturnal procession in which the Madonna begins the long religious process, in search of her son Jesus, now lifeless. It is a very important event for the Christian population and certainly an evocative spectacle even for non-believers.

The brothers, dressed in a tunic and a white headdress, dressed specifically for the event, precede in a long procession the faithful, those who hold the Madonna on their shoulders, sharing the physical as well as spiritual suffering. Consider that to be a brother you need to join a brotherhood through an acolyte introduction process, so it's not easy to be part of the brothers.

The procession begins exactly at 3 in the morning on the Friday before Easter, the time in which the Madonna leaves the church to which she belongs Santa Teresa and from here the procession starts which will touch many churches in the city, including the church inside the prison, where the faithful stop briefly and sing some prayers. This is also a solemn and moving moment, the face of the statue is very realistic and describes well the pain of a mother for the death of her son.

The route of the procession is very long, probably close to 5 miles and is completed in about six hours, considering the breaks of about a quarter of an hour for each church in which it stops. The procession retreats late in the morning, the line of faithful grows ever larger as time passes and the tiredness of the faithful begins to be clearly visible on their faces.

The tail end of the procession, immediately after the statue of the Madonna, is made up of the band of musicians who accompanies the entire ceremony until the end, playing melancholy music that is associated with the pain and prayers of the faithful. This tradition has been going on for many decades now, my grandmother told me that the holy procession was only stopped during the years of the world wars and finally the pandemic.

When I was a teenager, my mother and my older brother had the habit of waking up late at night and, despite the sleep and a bit of initial listlessness, our presence was always guaranteed. My father, at the time a brother of the procession, every time he approached us (he was dressed in the classic hooded coat) he placed his hand on my head and only in this way did I understand that it was really him. Many years have passed and today we have somewhat lost this tradition.

However, I promised myself to recover this cult in a few years, when my eldest son begins to understand the event better and above all if he has the desire and enthusiasm to wake up in the middle of the night! It's not that simple! But I'm sure that a good breakfast and the promise of looking at these hooded men could really arouse his curiosity (at first I was a little terrified, the white hood doesn't inspire much tranquility and reminds us of some sect or in any case nothing positive) .

La settimana di Pasqua inizia con un importante evento religioso, la processione notturna in cui la Madonna inizia il lungo iter religioso, alla ricerca del figlio Gesù, ormai privo do vita. È un evento molto importante per la popolazione cristiana ed uno spettacolo certamente suggestivo anche per i non credenti.

I fratelli, vestiti con una tunica ed un copricapo bianco, vestiti ad hoc per l'evento, precedono in una lunga processione i fedelissimi, coloro che sorreggono sulle spalle la Madonna, condividendo la sofferenza fisica, oltre che spirituale. Considera che per essere un fratello è necessario entrare in una confraternita mediante un processo di presentazione dell'accolito, per cui non è semplice far parte dei fratelli.

La processione inizia esattamente alle 3 del mattino del venerdì prima della Pasqua, orario in cui la Madonna esce dalla chiesa di appartenenza Santa Teresa e da qui parte la processione che toccherà molte chiese della città, inclusa la chiesa all'interno del carcere, dove i fedeli fanno una breve sosta e cantano alcune preghiere. Anche questo è un momento solenne e commovente, il viso della statua è molto realistico e descrive bene il dolore di una madre per la morte del proprio figlio.

Il percorso della processione è molto lungo, sfiora probabilmente le 5 miglia ed è compiuto in circa sei ore, considerando le pause di circa un quarto d'ora per ogni chiesa in cui si ferma. La processione si ritira al mattino inoltrato, la fila dei fedeli si amplia sempre più con il passare del tempo e la stanchezza dei fedeli inizia ad essere ben visibile sui loro volti.

La coda della processione, subito dopo la statua della Madonna, è composta dalla banda di musicisti che accompagna l'intera cerimonia sino al termine, suonando musiche malinconiche che si associano al dolore ed alla preghiera dei fedeli. Questa tradizione si protrae ormai da molti decenni, mia nonna mi ha raccontato che la santa processione è stata ferma solo durante gli anni delle guerre mondiali ed in ultimo della pandemia.

Quando io ero adolescente, con mia madre e mio fratello maggiore c'era l'abitudine di svegliarsi a notte fonda e, nonostante il sonno ed un po' di svogliatezza iniziale, la nostra presenza era sempre garantita. Mio padre, all'epoca un fratello della processione, ogni qualvolta si avvicinava a noi (lui era vestito del classico camice con cappuccio) mi posava la mano sul capo e solo così io comprendevo che fosse realmente lui. Sono trascorsi ormai tanti anni ed oggi noi abbiamo un po' perso questa tradizione.

Mi sono promesso di recuperare però questo culto tra qualche anno, quando mio figlio maggiore inizierà a comprendere meglio l'evento e soprattutto se avrà voglia ed entusiasmo di svegliarsi nel bel mezzo della notte! Non è poi così semplice! Ma sono certo che una buona colazione e la promessa di guardare questi uomini incappucciati potrebbe davvero incuriosire la sua curiosità (io all'inizio ne ero un po' terrorizzato, il cappuccio bianco non ispira molta tranquillità e ricorda qualche setta o comunque nulla di positivo).
