Chromium's Backyard Bird Project
Hello Everyone and Welcome to the Start of My Adventure
Turns out it was basic flight training day for all the kids today.
Ahhhh INR
Well of course I didn't have my camera with me.....but an idea came to me. This backyard would be a perfect bird photography location and my new project was born.
This corner of the yard has an Apple,Cherry, and Pair trees. Unfortunatly the Cherry tree is dying and we need to take it down soon =(
Moving along we have the part of the lawn that has been the bain of my existence since I was about 10 years old....There are actual fences behind the Ivy farm there and I've battling it for some time.
Soon the Morning Glory will cover most of that Ivy and bloom through the Fall provided I don't get motivated on removal this year.
Lastly we have the south side. To the far left you can see part of the patio and the Plum tree on the SouthWest corner of the house.
The yard gets a good amount of birds as is due to the fruit trees and the number of insects and worms here but I want to draw them to certain areas that are the most photofriendly and start bringing in more Hummingbirds.
The Robins are here throughout the day hunting bugs and waiting for the Cherries to ripen.
This one has a green caterpillar and about 4 spiders in it's mouth already and must be taking it all back to it's nest for the little ones.
Time to head back to the brood, those kids aren't going to feed themselves....YET <,<
We are also hip deep in Sparrows here and there are at least 3 different families of them nesting in varios places in the greenry.
This one here has also found a green caterpillar and is looking to add to it's booty before returning to the nest.
Seems like a bad day for little green caterpillars O.o
Got this one just before lift off =)
Now to make the yard even more Bird friendly !!!
First I dropped a brick of suet into the cadge feeder and hung it in the plum tree and then went back to fill the Hummingbird feeder.
There are Sparrows hitting up the suet feeder before I even get the Hummingbird feeder filled
Now I just need to set up my spots to shoot from and I should start getting some good bird shots.

I am so glad to see you posting again! I have missed your wonderful photography. Setting up feeding stations to attract more birds to come to you sounds like a perfect plan. That is a wonderful backyard with plenty of great habitat. I will be looking forward to seeing more posts from you soon
Hello @melinda010100 and thanks for stoping in, always nice to hear from you.
Yes I'm back =) and this project started about 3 weeks ago and I have lots of images I paired down this post due to seeing the contest this week from @nelinoeva, Many images to post for that particular subject....
Plus much more.
This yard gets a lot of wildlife...
Just this week alone we have had Squirles,Raccoons,Opossums,Skunks(le pew) and as an added bounus I was out on the front step having a smoke at about 11 pm and a bear came tearassing right through the front yard less than 10' in front of me ( I think I peed a little) and ran into er through the Rhododendrons hit the fence and tore it's way over/through it....just fixed that section from the storm last year. Oh yeah, the Deer are starting to poke around looking for Apples in the back.
That is one exciting yard! Can't wait to see more posts!
Wow, your backyard is full with life, but the bear is quite a shock, eh? 🙂
Yeah it was a shock !!!
I see bears in the park from time to time but never running through my front yard... 10' from me...O.O
OMG! This was close. 😱
Aww, the sparrow with the cheeks full like a chipmunks was pretty cute! I can't wait to see your captures of hummingbirds.
Yeah mee too lol
If you check out the next post I mention that they have been snubbing my feeder =/ for like 2 weeks....
Sounds and looks like a great plan.
That is a beautiful area.
Hello @jacey.boldart and Thanks, I was lucky enough to grow up here...<,<(well sorta lol) my parents bought the place when I was like 9 years old. The south side of the yard borders a Redwood Park with a giant playgroung/picnic area,a nice little Zoo, Duckpond, Flower Garden, if you jump over the fence there your in the park.
You have a beautiful yard. It is a pity of course that the cherry tree died. Look, this thrush is pretty smart. In summer, it protects these trees from worms and insects, and in autumn, its fruits are eaten. It's funny. The photo of this sparrow with a flower, unusual for me, is simply touching! Wow! You even sell special food for wild birds! I didn't even know this existed.)
Hi @ratel and thanks for stopping in and for the kind words !
The Sparrow shots were my favorite ones from that day, the Daisey, the Worm in it's mouth and I caught it at take off with its wings out.... =)
There are whole sections of bird food and feeders in hardware store garden centers here. Type in Bird food and feeders in Amazon and you'll find a ton of it as well. I jsu picked up 20 lb. bags of mixed seed, peanuts, and sunflower seeds today.
Oh and if you wan't to get rich, invent a bird feeder that a Squrrel can't loot and pillage =)
Also you have a great portfolio of bird shots as well as many others, I really enjoy your photography !!
I will miss that cherry tree, been playing in it since I was 10 years old I'm 57 now so me and the tree go way back...
You have dove right back in! I have four birdfeeders up and it really attracts a crowd. When I got up this morning, there were birds all over the feeders, a rabbit eating under the feeder along with a Mallard family, 3 ducklings, and a mom. I put suet up, but, it melted last week in the shade.
Doesn't yours melt? You really got some good shots in there! I will have to keep checking here as you don't come up in my feed! :(
Thanks @dswigle, I did kinda jump back in on the deep end lol
The suet I use is garenteed not to melt under 115 degrees and I doesn't get much above 70 degrees here on the coast, but I did replace an almost gone block and the leftover was in a metal bowl in the sun and it melted right away. I'm up to 3 feeders Seed,Suet, and Hummingbird and I've been eyeballing this feeder tree with 4 different feeder types <,< but have been resisting......so far lol
I don't think I have ever seen one with 4 different types of feeder types! Do you mean different foods? I can only imagine. You will have to show me a picture. That sounds fun, yes!?
I have one suet that melts and the other is out there all through the summer. It is one with sunflower seeds in it. I will take a picture of the wrapper next time I replenish it. The others seem to not last or perhaps I am just buying wrong.
I took the hummingbird feeder down for now as I was getting an ant trail up there. I have never had THAT problem before either.
A weird year. The universe is unhappy.
Have a super Sunday! Denise
I've also kicked out 4 more posts after this one....
I saw that and will circle around after I finish #MarketFriday. :) You are so prolific now!
