I just woke up this morning, reminiscing on one of the most embarrassing moments in my first years as an undergraduate. I guess you are ready for this funny but yet an awkward moment I had with one of my girl crush, lol. During my first year in the university, I was kinda still dependent on my parents for money, they gave me almost everything I asked for. “To whom much is given,much is expected “ my daddy would say. He has always cautioned me about girls and his experiences with them, he barely have a talk with me without talking about how so many girls has rendered some men useless. To him, he was protective of his child. I have always been a child that wants to follow his heart, do mistakes and learn from them, daddy please forgive me and don’t take this personal 😂.
On that faithful day, I set out that night to go meet my crush in her hostel. I was full of joy and optimistic on how everything would turn out. Before then I had ironed my clothes thoroughly and sprayed some good deodorant, I read up some articles on how to impress a girl, I guess I was just stupid😂😂. I took some money with me ( about two thousand naira). I strolled from my apartment that night to her hostel, it was just a stone throw. This was the same clothe I wore that day.

On my way, I met a number of friends, classmates and acquaintances whom I exchanged greetings with. It was just the first week of the semester, so many people just came back from home to school. I got to her hostel and gave her a call with my second number. “Why are you bugging my phone?, I told you I’m not interested in you” she said. With a mild voice I said “this is Dominic, I’m in front of your hostel”. Later she told me she actually thought it’s the guy who has been disturbing her. She came out of her hostel and we hugged each other tightly. It was the first time we were seeing each other after two months. She complemented me on my dressing and deodorant. I smiled sheepishly and said to myself “wow, she’s falling”, I was then feeling on top of the world😹. After some deep conversations with her, I asked if she has eaten, and she said yes. I insisted we go get some suya meat ( a popular meat made from beef, common among west Africans).

She obliged and we went to a suya stand. I told the guy to put suya worth 1500 naira and he did that. On top of my voice I said “put more” and he added more. I touched my pocket to be sure my money is still intact, it was still there. “I have more than enough” I said to myself. I brought out the money from my pocket only to find out that it was just a paper.

Wtf, how would my 2000 naira note turn a paper, this has to be some sort of magical realism🤣🤣. My crush never knew what was going on. “What is it” she asked. I was totally embarrassed and wondered where I would start explaining from. “ I couldn’t find my money” I whispered to her like one who was about to cry. She felt pity for me and took out her phone to call her roommate to bring some money for her. At this moment, the suya guy and the people around had known what was going on. My body was filled with goosebumps and I wished I had wings to fly away. A Good Samaritan there now told me to go that he would settle the bills. I took a deep breath and my heart was filled with joy. My crush and I never hesitated to give gratitude to this young man. We quickly left that area and looked for a serene area to help calm my nerves. My crush brought out the suya and tried giving me some. With shyness, I looked away and said no.

                  CONCLUSION 

On this day, I learnt the greatest lesson of my life which is never to try impressing someone. It occurred to me that my money was taken by pickpockets. I have also learnt to always check my pocket whenever I’m about to buy something. Please don’t be like me. Thanks for reading.
