Some holiday whiskey treats!

A short time ago I wrote a post about the gift that I "got" for my friend for Christmas. It was six two ounce vials that I poured some of my favorite whiskeys and bourbons in to share with him. What I didn't mention is that when we met for dinner that night, he also gave me a gift.

A while ago when we were camping he showed me these glasses where you freeze them with a special silicon insert and then they come out of the freezer looking like what you see above. It is basically a large ice cube that takes up a half of the glass in a diagonal fashion.

When you pour your drink of choice into the glass, it has a rather dramatic effect. Unfortunately, my glass was frosting something fierce, so it doesn't look as awesome as it would if the sides were free of frost.

It's still pretty cool though I think.

Here is a picture of what it looks like from the top. I think I accidentally over filled the insert, so it didn't quite separate the way I expected it to. I will try to be more careful next time I use it.

I already had some large cube silicon ice trays that I use quite frequently, but this is just another cool thing to add to my collection. I am really glad he bought one for me. He got one for himself too in case you were wondering.

Now, some people feel that drinking whiskey on ice is a cardinal sin. Other people say that the best way to drink whiskey is whatever way you enjoy it.

I like that last sentiment.

While I have been known to drink some whiskeys neat or with a little bit of water, I really prefer to drink them chilled on the rocks. The good thing about this glass and the large cubes is it allows the whiskey to chill slowly and not get watered down from smaller cubes melting too quickly.

It really makes a huge difference. Especially for the barrel proof whiskeys and bourbons.

The next weekend, I headed to the store and my wife asked me if I was going to go down the whiskey aisle. Since it is very rare that we actually go into stores anymore, I felt it was a foregone conclusion that yes I was going to take a trip down the whiskey aisle.

Despite the huge selection of bottles in all price ranges, my eyes eventually fell on this $20 USD bottle of Wild Turkey 101 Rye. If you have read my posts in the past, you know I like my Wild Turkey. I have a bottle of 101 bourbon at home as well as four other flavors of Wild Turkey, but this rye I had never tried before.

At just $20 this is actually a really great bottle of whiskey. I want to say I cracked it open that very night, but that wouldn't be true. The fact is, I went a little hard on the barrel proof stuff the night before and it was going to be a Captain Morgan night for me.

I did open it the next night and I have to say for the price, it was pretty exceptional. It has the spice that you expect from a good rye as well as a nice caramel or butterscotch flavor. There was something else that really stood out to me in the flavor profile, but like a dunce, I can't remember what it was right now.

Probably wood or oak or something like that. Who knows. I will have to try it again this weekend and let you know!

If you happen to be walking through the store and like me yours eyes settle on this bottle, don't let the price tag fool you. It is really good and you should definitely pick up a bottle. Especially if you are a fan of rye whiskey in particular.

From your expression towards it definitely it's a nice whiskey, I wish I could have some lol.

Do they not have whiskey where you live? There are so many varieties out there. I know import/export taxes were pretty high at one point though.

"It really makes a huge difference. Especially for the barrel proof whiskeys and bourbons." - Amen to that!

I agree with you on the Wild Turkey flavors, but another flavor I have noticed from time to time with that particular whiskey is a subtle note of cherries. Sounds a little weird, but I always seem to sense a hint of cherry in there. Who knows.. Everyone's palate is a little different too.

I love the idea of giving away 2oz pours as a gift! Never crossed my mind to do something like that. That's awesome.. as well as those glasses with the wedged shaped ice. Neat idea there too.

Yeah, the bottles were only about a dollar a piece on Amazon. I got a dozen and kept the other six so I can maybe do it again for him next year or gift some out to a different friend at some point.

That barrel proof stuff kicks my butt! I will have to look for those cherry notes next time I drink some!

The chilled glasses look neat. Are they a bit cold to hold? I've seen the stone cubes some people have to chill their drinks.

I am thinking I'll try some bourbon soon to compare with my whiskies. I'll see what I can find.

The glass does get a bit cold yes. It wasn't too bad honestly though. You are usually just sipping, so you never have it in your hand very long. I have found the stones don't get much love in the whiskey communities. They look cool but they usually just end up hurting your teeth. I look forward to seeing what you find bourbon wise!
