China urges college graduates to work in villages as urban unemployment soars

"The government will offer tax incentives and loans to college graduates who start businesses to serve the rural community, the statement added. Similar benefits will be offered to existing small businesses in villages that hire college graduates, including in fields such as housekeeping and elderly care"

--- They will fight to get such jobs! Every graduate dreams of working in the countryside. After all, who wouldn't want to work in the poorest areas with the highest unemployment & lowest salaries?

"The urban unemployment rate for the 16-24 aged soared to a historic 18.2% in May, according to most recent government statistics. The figure did not factor in new college graduates for this year.
China only surveys employment in urban areas."

--- & only those with a hukou in these urban areas are counted. Migrant workers with hukous from the countryside don't get counted. & these uncounted unemployed come exactly from those areas where the new graduates are supposed to find work.
There is a reason why these unemployed are not looking for work in their hometowns.

UN human rights chief to forgo second term amid China trip criticism

"Activists and a number of western governments, from Britain to the EU, have urged the former Chilean president and torture survivor to publish a long-awaited report on China’s treatment of its Uyghur population in Xinjiang.
Responding to the calls, Bachelet said on Monday in a separate speech that her office was updating its official assessment of the situation in Xinjiang, and it would be shared with the Chinese government for factual comments before publication. She did not say when the report would be released for the public to scrutinise."

--- True to herself until the end. That report is long overdue. Perhaps she hopes she can delay it until she is gone?

"She reported that the Chinese government had agreed to arrange an “annual senior meeting on human rights” with her agency, but she did not give more details on the plan."

--- Wow! That will help a lot.
Gosh, I would say 'good riddance', but with the current state of affairs in UN organisations, you have to fear that her replacement might even be a CCP cadre.

Cambridge professor whose role was ‘funded by China’ cautioned against Uyghur debate

"Jesus College, where Nolan is based, has deep financial ties with China – including a £200,000 grant from the Chinese government in 2018 to its Global Issues Dialogue Centre (GIDC). It has also accepted £155,000 of funding from Chinese technology company Huawei.
[...] Nolan himself has previously made headlines about his role as Chong Hua Chair at the university’s Centre of Development Studies. The role was funded by a £3.7m donation in 2012 from the Chong Hua Foundation, which was allegedly controlled by the daughter of China’s former prime minister, Wen Jiabao.
Reports claim that Nolan had been her professor at Cambridge and the funding was secured after a series of secret meetings in Beijing between 2009 and 2011"

--- Totally normal. Absolutely nothing untoward going on here. He just doesn't like to talk about Chinese problems because ... er ... of his intellectual integrity.

"In a statement, Jesus College said it was “strongly committed to the principles of freedom of speech and academic independence.”"

--- 'But we have to consider all that Chinese money...'

In 'Miracle' City Shenzhen, Fears for China's Economic Future

"Shenzhen posted an overall economic growth of only 2% in the first quarter of this year, the lowest-ever figure for the city, aside from the first quarter of 2020
[...] If Shenzhen is in trouble, that is a warning sign for the world's second-largest economy."

--- Yep. Shanghai was the most modern & (allegedly) well-organised city in China, but Shenzhen was economically the most dynamic. If both Shanghai & Shenzhen are in trouble, it doesn't look good.

Wall Street's China problems multiply with warning on banker pay

"Publicly, executives say they’re as committed as ever to China. Filippo Gori, the Asia-Pacific chief for JPMorgan Chase, captured the prevailing line in a recent interview with Bloomberg Television, saying his bank was focusing on the next 25 years in China, not the next quarter.
But privately, a growing number of executives in the region are expressing doubts about their banks’ immediate futures in the country"

--- Not JP Morgan, though. The major Wall Street China shill doubles down: JPMorgan says Chinese assets are a good diversifier right now

"All in all, the top six global banks made roughly $42 million in China last year"

--- Almost LOL.

The Sheriff and the Banker? Russia and China in Central Asia

"In some ways, the Russian and Chinese economies are complementary. Each side has the access to resources or capital that the other wants. Mutual trade is growing but unbalanced. China is Russia’s top partner for imports and a destination for Russia’s products. However, Russia is not even among the top five destinations for China’s products. Moreover, trade is also heavily focused on exporting Russian raw materials, natural gas, and petroleum oils, which comprise 70 percent of its overall exports to China. Moscow has long been concerned that it would become China’s “natural-resource appendage.” In the long run, as it seeks to de-carbonize its economy, China may find its close economic partnership with Russia misaligned. Hence, the presently beneficial economic partnership has a near-term expiration date given the two countries’ long-term trajectories."

--- That is, if you can trust Chinese promises of decarbonisation.

"Russian fears over the Chinese takeover of the Russian Fear Eastern regions have largely subsided since the successful 2008 border demarcation"

--- Just wait a while. If Russia is weak & China strong enough ...

Chinese leader Xi Jinping signs new rules governing 'non-war' military operations

"Chinese leader Xi Jinping has signed a directive allowing 'non-war' uses of the military, prompting concerns that Beijing may be gearing up to invade the democratic island of Taiwan under the guise of a "special operation" not classified as war.
[...] "[It] provides a legal basis for non-war military operation,""

--- As if that was needed. Remember Tiananmen? Remember why Chiang Kai-Shek went to Taiwan?

Bachelet will keine zweite Amtszeit

"Titel: «The 800».
