Were My Chaos Packs a Good Investment?
Everyone has been very excited waiting for the opening of our Chaos Legion card packs. Today was that day! After having all the fun of opening the packs and see what cards were acquired it was time to find out if my investment in the packs was a profitable decision.
I purchased 300 packs in the original presale. I purchased them in lots of 100 so that with each purchase I received 10 free packs. I used my airdropped SPS to purchase the packs so I earned 10% off the purchase price. Since the packs were $4 apiece the price would have been (300 x $4) $1,200. With my discount of using SPS I paid $1,080 for them. With my 30 free packs it means I received 330 packs for $1,080 or $3.27 a pack. But wait, you might say, I also had to have vouchers to purchase each of those packs. I had sufficient SPS staked in order to be airdropped the required 300 purchases packs so I did not spend any additional money to be able to buy the packs. Thus the price remains $1,080 for the total purchase.
SO...what did I get for my purchases?
Let's start with the best - I received 10 different Legendary cards with the most expensive being 6 cards of Doctor Blight through the airdrop. These 10 cards have a market value of $1,293.55 and I'm already in the black for my purchase.
I received 26 different gold cards, one of which was a water summoner. Most of them were common cards but there were a few rare cards, though no epic or legendary ones. The market value is $876.21 for the gold cards.
Next I went through each splinter and added the value of the cards, not counting any gold or legendary cards since they are already accounted for:
FIRE: 13 cards with a value of $355.93
WATER: 15 cards with a value of $597.04
EARTH: 13 cards with a value of $625.90
LIFE: 14 cards with a value of $355.77
DEATH: 13 cards with a value of $311.36
DRAGON: (only 2 Dragon cards were received and they were both Legendary)
NEUTRAL: 9 cards with a value of $174.42
I ended up with 110 unique new cards out of the 1,650 cards contained in those 330 packs that carry a total market value of $4,590.18 so:
$4,590.18 market value - $1,080 cost = $3,510.18 PROFIT
This would be a great financial opportunity to sell the cards, take my money, and smile all the way to the bank. However, I'm an avid player, I can't sell these cards, I NEED them to play, lol. And not only that, the highest level that any of them reached is Level 4, and most are Level 2 or Level 3. That won't do at all, I need the good ones leveled up to MAX. So I'm back to HODLing my SPS airdrop and vouchers and slowly building up this new deck.
Right now there's a huge learning curve, learning where the new cards are and figuring out new strategies using the new abilities.
So see you all on the battlefield while we wait on the next great development from the best PlayToEarn game out there!

Oh wow! That's a big ROI indeed! Enjoy playing them. :D
No better play-to-earn game than Splinterlands! And in the end, it's doing great things for Hive as well.
Those different cards are confusing to me. I wish I could learn more.
Anyway, I'm glad you made profit from your card purchased.
I know, all the new cards are confusing to me too, lol. I almost ran out of time trying to pick a team since the new cards make the decisions that much harder. Don't get discouraged, it takes awhile to develop a deck and find your strategy!
I am even yet to grab the old ones very well.
How do I go about getting a strategy?
The only way I know is just to play and gain experience. You can also watch battles of other people and get an idea of what worked for them. In the beginning I was overwhelmed as well, trying to figure out all the different abilities and remember what cards were in which splinter. In fact, I still have problems with that, lol.
Okay, thanks for the tip👍
This is terrible logic. You could have sold the vouchers for $$$. Let's say you could have timed the market perfectly and bought 300 vouchers for the minimum price of $15. Or $4,500.
So if instead of buying and opening packs, you had sold your vouchers and held your pack-buying money, you'd have more value in your account, you could go buy all the cards you earned and have ~$1,000 left over.
I know this comes off as a bit aggressive, but the above is a big fallacy in investment. Think of it this way, do you think of the airdropped SPS as infinite ROI since you get it "for free"? Do stock returns give infinite ROI because you already have the stock so any returns are free? Holding all that value in SPS has a cost, even if it doesn't feel like it. So it's easy to fool ourselves into thinking we made better decisions than we did. And hopefully you or others will see this and be better able to account for the true costs of an investment.
I think she played it smart, so to say it is a fallacy is untrue. It is entirely true to her. I am curious though - how did you make out? How many packs did you get, and how much SPS do you have staked to be a part of the governing body of the game?
But I'll play anyways. I made out very well. I valued vouchers at their face value, so I sold all the ones I got (only about 60, but I was new in the game at that time). And I sold over the course of the month, so probably got ~$17 in value for each voucher. I used that value to buy a bunch of cards and flesh out my Silver deck. I believe in splinterlands, so I kept my money in the system, but I felt vouchers were overvalued unless you bought 1000 packs and got the guaranteed GF Dr. Blight and the title. So I will admit I do feel some vindication in my strategy seeing this post and that I was right to sell my vouchers (even if see Dr. Blight at $140 makes me wish I had gotten one - I can still buy one with the profits I made selling vouchers and be ahead).
For me, it's about more than an investment and profit. I'm a fan of the game, and I totally support Splinterlands for making the kinds of decisions they have made to keep their tokens viable and grow their player base.
But you have your way and I hope it works out for you. I'm happy staking my SPS and earning my vouchers rather than buying them.
I'll reply here to both you and @enginewitty, since my comment wasn't clear and left both y'all with the wrong impression.
One of my biggest complaints about the crypto space is that any time someone says "sell" they're accused on lacking faith or FUD. When in reality selling can just be shorthand for making better investments in the same system. So I wasn't advocating cashing out of SL, but that you could have invested your same resources in a slightly different way and come out ahead.
So instead of using your vouchers and buying presale packs, you could have sold those vouchers and waited to re-invest that money in cards. Then you could have bought exactly the cards you opened and still had $1,000 of value from selling vouchers. You could then use that extra value to e.g. go buy 100 more packs, buy 3000 SPS for more vouchers in the second phase, etc.
Because you thought of your vouchers as free, and not as a commodity with value, you made a decision that led to less value. And yes, opening packs is fun, and if you value that at $1000 then good on you. But to come here and say you had a positive ROI is misleading. People like @arrliinn saw this and think you made money, when you did not.
PS: On a personal note, I'm sorry about the HUGE downvote you received. I was initially smug when I saw that, thinking someone else was calling out your misinformation. But it looks like it's some petty vindictive bullshit, which I don't like. Downvotes should be for weeding out low effort content or misinformation, not to carry out grudges. It's a small gesture, but I've removed my 0.002 hive downvote in solidarity.
Thanks @badrag for explaining your position better. Another way to look at this (and that's the beauty of everyone having their own opinion) is that I wanted to buy in presale and get the 10% discount for SPS and also be eligible for the airdrop of the Dr. Blight card. You had to have the vouchers in presale. And I was awarded 6 of the Dr Blight cards for my airdrop rewards, which have a current value of $840. So it's really not that different of an outcome. 😀😀
And thank you for the solidarity!
Oh cool! I didn't see you hadn't counted the Dr. Blights! That is such a huge part of the benefit of the pre-sale, so I'm glad to see that after you factor that in, it's pretty close to even! In doing my own numbers, it seemed that the only way to make money on the pre-sale was to get 1,000 packs. The guaranteed GF Dr. Blight + the title pushed it over the edge.
And I should also say, I'm not all about the ROI myself. There are probably better investments in crypto than SL if all I care about is $$$. I've posted a few times about how renting up in league at the end of season is objectively a pretty bad decision with a negative ROI. But I do it anyways, because it's fun and I enjoy opening extra chests for the chance of cool rewards.
So yeah, at the end of the day, if you're happy with your decision, it was a good decision, ROI be damned.
@markymark - ok, what the hell? Why are you STILL downvoting my every post? I know you didn't approve of me upvoting my own stuff, but I STOPPED after that. And yet you have now taken ove $100 of rewards from me. Enough is enough don't you think?
Especially when you are upvoting and getting curation rewards from multiple accounts Mark. You're a stand-up cat, so please don't be a hypocrite and say someone else that's getting a minor percentage of what you are - can't do the same thing @themarkymark. A husband and wife team here embodies what communities can become and that's families coming to and loving Hive and supporting each other.
Thanks for the support @enginewitty. There are all kinds of "family" and I truly appreciate my Alliance family!😘
Just trying to find out why and got an explanation which you can see too. They call that 'comment farming' so let's keep that off the dinner table 😉
Please explain the advantage of one account with 10K and another with 20K both getting curation rewards over an account with 30K.
Don't cry to me, self voting comments on the last day is about the shittiest thing you can do here outside of plagiarism.
I see no tears, and was being nice. Also wasn't aware of the self-voting comments in the last hours. Sounds like she is sorry though.
They are all sorry once caught. I'm not the villain here.
Dear @themarkymark, I think we don't know each other, and I rarely participate in such discussions on Hive, but I believe I should comment on this downvote. While I am not sure all of the reasons for the downvote, I do hope the person is informed beforehand and given a chance (at least twice) to fix the issue before getting downvoted.
I've seen @blueeyes8960 supporting other women on Hive and engaging with them. She is an enthusiastic and dedicated Hiver, so I hope you will think about it.
Thank you for reaading this.
Thank you @trangbaby.
I don't really think that "caught" is the right word. I've never even heard the term "comment farming" before this. And of course, I'm sorry, I had no idea it was such a negative thing. Yes, I was looking to improve my stake with my own voting power. I vote as large a trail as I can manage with my power and I vote on lots of people's comments, not just my own. And the comments were legitimate engagements, not thrown up for voting purposes.
And you chastised me with no comment or explanation, let alone a warning. I stopped immediately, yet you continued to downvote the next 2 posts as well, so I'm hoping that this is the end of it.

Looks like you did pretty well! Congrats on all those!
I didn't have nearly as many vouchers in the presale, so I could only buy 50. I traded them for 80 xchaos though, so I improved a little. We'll see if I get anything good when I open them.
Well good luck to you, I hope you get some great ones!
WOW! That is amazing @blueeyes8960! Splinterlands has got to be the most profitable game I have ever played, Congradulations!!
Thanks @crypt-skip - I'm surprised you can stand being around me when I play, since it seems to give Tourette's Syndrome when I lose a dozen battles in a row, lol.
Totally jealous of the gold foil Forgotten One!
Yeah he should come in handy! But we both can be jealous of @saffisara - she really got some good bling - good thing she's a guildmate!
Ha ha! Right? I want a gold foil River Hellondale - she is beast.
I got her in regular, but not gold...
WOW.. You got some good stuff there Sister 😉 and you got some really AMAZING golds. It was a Great thing to open packs even if it took forever 😁 lol
You rock @blueeyes8960 ❤️ Im happy to be in the same guild as you.
Happy weekend 🤗🌹🤗
Yes, I wasn't going to open them all in the same sitting, but I was like a kid in a candy shop, I just couldn't stop, lol.
You are the Chaos Queen though, I can't imagine what your account must be worth - GOOD FOR YOU!!
