CROCHET TOP - CAN YOU GUESS WHAT'S WRONG?
Hello everyone! Before reading through this post can you immediately guess what is wrong with the top in the picture I posted? If not, follow along for a story on how I messed up a top I started early this week.
So earlier this week, I started a top to wear it to work today, which is Friday. It was going to be an off-shoulder top with some lace design at the top and the lower part would have a tube look with some mesh and all.
I started as usual with the lower part, making a chain long enough for my bust measurement, then I started working it up. I used a 3.5mm hook, all went well with this part of the top and when I added my mesh where I needed it to be.
So, It was time to work on the upper part. Before I go on, I would like to say the idea for this top was inspired by @daiisiilva on Instagram. She made a top similar to this, the difference would be the shell stitches. Mine is different from hers but the same style. Alright to continue my little story, remember it was supposed to be an off-shoulder top with that lace design.
So to do my lace design, I made a row of shell stitches separated by slip stitches. I kinda followed the same pattern for the next row, the row after that has a series of chain 4s in the middle of each shell. I changed colors and instead of starting with shell stitches, I started with chains like in the previous row. The last color also started with chains then regular double crochets in place of shells.
At this point it was a couple of minutes past 10 pm Thursday, I was sleepy and hungry but my goal was to be able to wear the top to work today, so I was happy that I finally completed the top. Now here is the heartbreaking part, when I put the top against my body, I discovered that I forgot to create the ARMHOLE!!!
My heart was shattered into a million pieces, I felt like crying at that moment. The most painful part was that after all my effort and time I wouldn’t be able to wear the top and the fact that there was nothing I could do unless I unravel and start over made it worse. I lost my appetite, counted my losses, and went to bed.
Well, I took some pictures, so you’ll better understand how ridiculous the top looks without the armhole.
If I were to wear it this way then I won't be able to move my arms.
And if I wear it like this then it won't be an off-shoulder top and the lace design would look off.
I still feel pained by this so I won’t be going back to that project anytime soon. So, here’s my question: Did you notice the error before I mentioned it? And has something like this ever happened to you?
Thanks for stopping by❤
Oh friend, "dress me slowly I'm in a hurry" said Napoleon Bonaparte and this is absolutely TRUE! The worst thing we can do is want to finish quickly, to achieve it is when we have to do everything slower so as not to make mistakes hahaha. I hadn't even noticed the error (in fact, I don't think I can fully understand it). The ruffle shouldn't be below the armpit or what? LOL.
Either way, you'll probably figure it out. The same thing happened to me sewing some fabrics backwards just when I thought I was going to finish the top and wear it at that moment. Well, no 😂.
Hahaha, I agree with you, if I hadn't been in so much of a hurry I would have noticed and if I had worked slower I may have had the result I was looking for.
Lol, there should be a space in between the ruffles on both sides to accommodate the arms.
😂😂 I can imagine how you must have felt.

I didn’t notice it! It’s a pity the mistake happened because it’s so pretty. Though it hasn’t happened to me, I can understand your pain because I know what it is to spend hours crocheting. Well, it won’t be happening again because you’d be extra cautious. But, it’s annoying still.
Indeed it won't be happening again. I think it's pretty hard to notice until you put it on your body. I guess that is why I didn't see the error till I was done with the top.
Thank you for your comment!
You’re welcome!
The dress looks well on you. Thanks for sahring
I only noticed the error when you put it on and that was because of the design. The best thing to do is to loose it and reknit it, it happens because you are in a haste. I have once make a similar mistake before when sewing, I was making a baby dress and I forgot to put the waist rope and a baby cloth cannot be fitted unless you tie the rope to control it.
Yeah, it wouldn't have been a problem without that design. I'll be careful not to make such a mistake next time.
