CROCHET CHECKERED SWEATER VEST

Hello everyone. Welcome to a beautiful Friday. How is the weather over there? It rained a bit this morning here, so it’s a bit cold over here and I love it. My cardigan is doing so much in helping with the cold. The hexagon cardigan I made some time ago has slowly become my favorite. I wear it almost every day at work, the compliments I get are another bonus.

Today I am excited to share a checkered sweater vest I made recently. This was born out of my sole desire to make something different. A vest I can wear on a day that is not so cold yet will keep me warm on cold days too. The checkered pattern is one I have wanted to try for some time so I decided to do that.

IMG_20220506_145939.jpg

I started by making the ribbing for the sweater. I made a chain of 66, I didn’t use a tape for this which later turned out to be a serious mistake as I later found out it wasn’t big enough to accommodate my breast area. I’ll explain how I fixed that as we go on. So, I made double crochets on all 66 chains, the next row involved 2 sets of front post double crochets followed by 2 sets of back post double crochets. I did a total of 4 rows of the ribbing.

IMG_20220430_121939.jpg

For the main body of the sweater, I made 8 sets of boxes and switched between colors for each box. Each of the boxes has 8 stitches each - I alternated between single and double crochet between stitches. I continued in that pattern until it was time to create the armhole that was when I realized the mistake I made.

IMG_20220503_090323~2.jpg

The only way to correct that was to keep increasing the length without any reduction on the sides and later on add the space for the armhole. So I continued the pattern until I had my desired length for the vest.

IMG_20220503_115309~2.jpg

To create that armhole space, I added one extra box on each side of the first 3 boxes. It looked a bit rough but not necessarily noticeable. Afterward, I joined the shoulders, and sides, made the edges neater, and then did the collar and my vest was ready to wear.

I like the checkered pattern and how it looks in the end. I hope you like it too.

I don't know shit about crocheting and stuff but this looks nice. I really like crop sweaters, I think the collar added a more trendy vibe to it and this is great. So... yea, I definitely like it too🥰

Hi Blezyn. This vest even classifies as a top-vest 😅. I like the checkered pattern and I'm glad you knew how to fix it along the way. That speaks volumes about your ability.

Thanks for sharing and I wish you a good weekend 😋.

Oh, it’s pretty. The collars gave it a different look. Funnily, I’m crocheting a sweater vest right now. I’ve not gone anywhere though — I just started it.

Oh wow, that's interesting. How's it coming along so far? Are you making a plain coloured vest or checkered like this one?

Plain coloured. It’s going well now, but I was frustrated before. The work kept curving and getting smaller, and I kept frogging. Finally, I decide to do the body separately, then attach the ribbing later.

Oh, I think that happens when your tension is too tight or when you forget to use the last stitch. Nice to see you're getting the hang of it.

I really don’t know why it kept turning out that way. And, yes, I’m getting better.

It may also be the size of the hook you used and the weight of the yarn. Which yarn are you using?

Yeye yarn.

If you're working with a bigger hook size then it's advisable to double the yarn because it's too thin for 3.5mm and above hook sizes

3.5mm really? I didn’t know that.

This is really cool, I like the design! And your squares are so perfect, when I've knitted squares they came out slanted (but they all came out slanted, so it worked as an unintentional pattern, lol).

Oh wow, I love how a mistake can create a new pattern in fashion. I'm glad you like my squares, thank you!

Hope you are monetizing this crochet of a thing? This looks so good on you. You did well 👍

Lately, I have been willing to learn this crocheting on YouTube. Will it be possible to develop a passion for this through watching on YouTube? 😔

Yes, I am, sometimes I take orders from people and create something for them.

Lately, I have been willing to learn this crocheting on YouTube.

YouTube is great for learning crochet. That is where I learnt the basics and now I just incorporate what I already know to create what I need.

I wouldn't say that. I don't advertise it as much as I used to because I am a little pressed for time. Mostly, I accept those who come to me directly and aren't problematic.
