[ENG] The "Pacific Gallery" a shopping center and a “cultural center” in Buenos Aires [ESP] La “Galería Pacífico” un centro comercial que también lo es cultural en Buenos Aires

A few days ago, my sister Myrna, who is in Buenos Aires enjoying the company of her youngest son, his lovely wife, and her grandson, sent me this series of photographs of a Shopping Center that she describes as a mall with “wide corridors and comfortable to move around, super well lit, thanks to the natural light that enters through its glass ceilings, and a lot of art on its walls and vaults”. Today I present this iconic Buenos Aires Shopping Center that beyond its comfort, its beauty, and its variety of shops and restaurants, has a history full of all kinds of events that make it even more interesting.

The Pacific Gallery building, which we are dealing with today, is a shopping center considered one of the most luxurious and largest in Buenos Aires, with an area of 11 thousand square meters, divided into three floors, a basement with 18 places to taste exquisite dishes, the ground floor with 150 shops and a first floor where there is a dance school, a headquarters of a University, and the Borges Cultural Center.
The building is located in the San Nicolás neighborhood, in the heart of the city, it occupies an entire block at the intersection of Florida pedestrian street and Córdoba Avenue. It was built by the architects Emilio Agrelo and Raúl Le Levacher in 1889, to house the "Au bon Marché" department stores, although it was never occupied by that company. The design of the building was inspired by the Victor Emmanuel II Gallery in Milan, Italy, and had services, such as mechanical elevators, lighting and centralized heating, that were top of the technological advances of the time.

At the beginning of the last century, the "Buenos Aires Pacific Railway" acquired the premises where the Shopping Center is today, since then it was baptized as the “Pacific Building”, although its functions were offices of the company that acquired and served it. The headquarters of the National Museum of Fine Arts was there between 1896 and 1940. In the middle of the century, the architects Aslan and Ezcurra made an important change and transformed the ground floor into a commercial gallery. After several years of abandonment, the building was recovered for its original purposes, work carried out by the architects “Juan Carlos López y Asociados”

The building has an architectural richness worthy of admiration, its columns, glass vaults, the design of its shops, and above all, the interior wall of the central dome with an area of 450 square meters, which was decorated with painted mural, between 1945-47, by several outstanding Argentine plastic artists: Antonio Berni, Lino Enea Spilimbergo, Demetrio Urruchúa and Juan Carlos Castagnino, who agreed to make a decoration that reflected the primary values of a socio-cultural type, such as family and relationship between man and nature, common to various cultures. This work had the collaboration of the Galician muralist Manuel Colmeiro Guimará, and later new murals by Julio Le Parc and Carlos Alonso were added, and it is considered the highest manifestation of muralism in Argentina.

A historical fact that is worth remembering, never to forget, is that a clandestine detention and torture center operated in the basement of the building during the last military dictatorship.

Currently, the building houses not only the Pacific Galleries, but is also the headquarters of the Jorge Luis Borges Cultural Center, where international exhibitions and cultural activities are held, a headquarters of the University of Tres de Febrero and the Julio Bocca Foundation, dedicated to classical dance. In 1989 the building was declared a National Historical Monument.

I love this ceiling, it must have been a lot better looking in actuality.
Hello Afterglow, we agree in our assessment about the dome of the Pacific Galleries. Indeed, seeing them in person is more enriching, in addition to the fact that the building has other murals on its walls and the design of its stores amazes us (all kinds of design in one place).

Hello dear friend Benjamin. What an incredibly exquisite shopping center! I've never seen a commercial establishment with gorgeous ceilings as richly decorated as this one (photo below). It made me imagine experiencing the feeling of being inside the glorious confines of a heavenly cathedral or the luxurious interiors of a royal palace. Do you think so too?
Hello dear Erne. I'm not a big fan of closed malls, but this is an exception to my criteria. Indeed, the dome of the building looks more like a work of a basilica. I have done a search for what some of the murals represent to differentiate them from religious works that have another purpose themselves. Thank you for your comment and receive a strong and fraternal greeting. I am indebted to the modern part of Panama that I hope to do as soon as I receive the photos that I have requested from some Venezuelan friends who live there.
Indeed, the feeling of being inside a basilica when exploring this mall's interior resonates with me too. I look forward to your story about Panama's modern architectural splendor. See you soon! 😊
Hola Yosoyada (ADA, ¿verdad?).
Hello Yosoyada (ADA, right?). Thank you very much for your comment. I have been lucky enough to travel a lot in my many years of life, and despite this, I do not have many photos of the places I have visited or lived. I am taking advantage of the fact that I have my family and close friends all over the world, part of the Venezuelan diaspora, and they please me by sending me photos of where they live or where they go. Receive a fraternal greeting.
A pleasure for me to travel virtually through your publications.
