Karate Joe let go of her arm. Jane slumped back against the padded booth seat, looking dazed. "They're..." She took a deep breath, and tried again. "Are they...?"

Karate Joe shook his head slowly, face buried in his hands. "Yeah", he said in a small voice.

Jane twisted in her seat to stare at their backs. "Do they have the recipe?"

"Yeah".

"Have they...have they tasted it?"

Joe lifted his head to look at her, a bleak look in his one good eye.

"Yes". His gaze wandered back to the two children, now sitting side by side on stools at the counter, examining menus.

Jane sat there staring into space, chewing at her bottom lip. When she spoke, her voice sounded far away, as if she were trying to remember something that had happened in a dream. "But if they've tasted it..."

This is a very intriguing story!!!! I hope you continue it. I wanna know what they ate, how they ate it, does it have anything to do with the eyes, and do the children know. For starters. I don't think I ever read any of your prose fiction before, only those fabulous songs you freewrote. So nice to have you here at freewritehouse!!!!

Thank you! Happy to be back. I also am intrigued by this story, because I have no idea where it's going 😆. Well, very little. The challenging thing about writing episodic fiction on the spot is you're kind of committed to anything once you write it, and that limits the possibilities more and more as the story moves forward. I hope I don't paint myself into too many corners!

(I do know what they ate tho. And I think (?) I know what the whole eye thing is about. Or at least part of it...)
