Revisiting the Garden

Revisiting the Garden.jpg

I've been away travelling for work... and as always, the garden is a bit of a mess when there aren't two of us around to take care of the garden, house, and kids... phew, I have no idea how some people manage to do it all by themselves! When I'm alone with the kids whilst my wife is working, it is hard to just to stay afloat and on top of everything that is coming in...

And on the few days in the tour that I did end up back at home, the highest priority was getting the retaining wall built and the playground area finished. And now that the playground area is mostly done... at least functional, the focus has shifted quite strongly to the retaining wall instead. Which is actually getting done quite fast mostly due to the efforts of my father-in-law... who did a huge chunk of it whilst I was away, and now I'm trying to pull my weight by lugging as many stones and rocks, and digging as much as possible!

Anyway, that brings us back to the garden... and there are areas that I had chopped back and mulched with river gravel that are doing quite nicely... the weeds and grass has been held back, and we are getting some really nice colours in some of the native bushes.

Whilst I was away, there was quite a bit of rain.... and coupled with the wind, that has meant that there are a few larger branches that have fallen and that need to taken to the green waste as they are too big for my little mulcher!

I ended up gathering them all and putting them in a big pile to be ready to be loaded for the tip run. Although, there are probably large chunks that I can break up so that they will fit the shredder. That is what I did the last time I had to do a big clean up... probably should do that again, we could use the mulch!

These branches aren't the biggest to have fallen since we have lived here... I could lift them just myself... but they are definitely heavy enough to cause a bit of damage if they hit a car or a person!

Meanwhile, the damp and rain has meant that we are getting lots of mushrooms popping up everywhere... and I mean every place that doesn't get a good amount of Sun to dry it out... I've been going around just kicking them all down, and then letting them just sit and decompose away. Perhaps I should just leave them alone and let them decompose the wood debris instead?
