Revisiting RogueTech
Modded games can be some of the best games ever... for instance, what the Long War mod did to XCOM2 was just out this world... and almost made it the only game that I ever needed.
Likewise, BattleTech was a decent but somewhat limited experience that brought the joy of running a mercenary company in the BattleTech universe almost to fruition... but then modders got their hands on it, and with RogueTech, it became one of these unique games that pushed the base vanilla game to its limits... and beyond! Introducing Clan Tech, and making the game really quite a stressed to the limits game of tactics and management, with everything just a little step away from disaster... wow, it was a BattleTech gamers wet dream.
I had played it heaps on the desktop years ago... it needs a crazy amount of RAM and CPU grunt... partly due to the unoptimised base game, which then has a million things stacked on top of it.
... and recently, I got the itch again, but to install it on my travelling laptop. These days, the gaming laptops have the CPU grunt to manage games like these without melting.
My first foray was unsuccessful, due to mods not being loaded properly on a mobile connection. So, I had to wait until I made it back home to stable broadband internet. And then... it installed and played like a treat. Until I was on tour again, and for some reason, I wasn't picking up proper salvage rights. Which is pretty critical for growing the strength of your mercenary company and for selling off for a bit of regular cash flow.
The game is hard enough, without having a dwindling pot of money...
... so, when I got back home today, one of the first things that I did was to do a clean reinstall of the RogueTech mod. But for some reason, I was getting non-loaded mods. Sigh... I was hoping that I wouldn't need to try and trouble shoot anything... these things a pure joy when they work, and somewhat frustrating when they don't!
I did a Clean Install... revalidated everything... everything that I could, essentially burning the whole thing down and starting again. Nothing worked...
... so, I gathered the logs and hopped on Discord. But before I loaded up a support ticket, I quickly checked the announcements (which is on the list of things that you should do before starting a support ticket...)
... and I see that the CAB (Community Asset Bundle) is undergoing a reorgansiation, and that means that the RogueTech launcher is not working properly. That is the launcher that does all the installing, downloading, and injecting... basically the crux of the whole thing.
Well, is that definitely my problem??? Not sure... but I have to wait until they get a new launcher up before I can rule that out. Sigh... I guess I'll be playing something else tonight!
Sad... I was so looking forward to hitting up some grinding missions to get myself some sweet Clan or Comstar tech.
