Little Bits and Pieces

One thing that I will miss a lot about leaving Europe is the easy access to a whole ancient continent's worth of silver bits and pieces from history! It was always easy to snap up a bargain from reputable dealers... and here in Australia, the much smaller supply means that you are pretty much always paying much more. Plus, you don't get the huge variety of coins and other pieces from all over the world!

Take for instance, these two 20 ECU silver pieces from Finland. At 0.925 purity and around 27 grams, they aren't pure or anything like that... but they are definitely a pretty way to mark important events and images from the north!

Aurora... one of things that I never got around to seeing whilst I was living in Europe... hopefully, one day!

... and a commemoration of the old Hanse mercantile empire... definitely a pivotal moment in Northern European history!

South Africa does have a bit of a history with putting out some interesting older silver content coins as well. I managed to pick up this 0.8 silver coin circulating commemorative coin... Personally, I think the design is pretty bland... but still, a piece of history... and silver is silver is silver!

... and then, lots of little pieces of silver content shrapnel of various quality. Of course, living in the Netherlands meant that I ended up picking quite a bit of Dutch coinage... which is worth a good deal more in Australia. Perhaps it would be good to do a little bit of a swap and sell some of the excess Dutch stuff to pick up some of the more interesting Australian mint pieces!

Lots of people did... and I thought that I liked the Aurora better, but now that I take another look... the Hanse is pretty cool!

That's a great point about how stuff is so readily available there. I never really thought of that. I guess we are pretty lucky to have access to the stuff we do here in the US, but it's probably not quite as historic as over in the UK.

Yeah, it really is the idea that lots of stuff was made in Europe... and then shipped over through the years as well. US is probably better than Australia though... bigger population and richer!
