Interesting Gift from Parents!
Ever since we moved back to Australia, my mother has been doing a weird clear out of her house... and bringing over lots of things... sort of heirloom sorts of things to my brother and I, and our spouses and kids. It is really quite strange, as it has the feeling that she is preparing to disappear or something like that... but on the other hand, it seems like she wants to be in a position where she can pass on the heirlooms and tell us the story that is attached to each piece in person. I guess that is much nicer than having us discover a pile of things, and not knowing anything about it all...
So, it appears that when we were born, my parents bought an 1-ounce gold piece to give to us when we were older. And apparently that time has come, and this piece has now been gifted to me! I hope that when I am much older, I will be able to pass down little pieces of family history down to my kids...
So, a lovely 1 ounce gold piece, poured at the legendary Perth Mint... which at the time, would have been near where they were living. Interestingly enough, we have a sort of neighbourly connection to the Mint... there was a false conviction of some local brothers in connection to swindling gold from the Perth Mint.
Anyway, I'm pretty sure that this has nothing to do with it! After all, they were pardoned after it became apparent that the police were corrupt and the charges and evidence were fabricated.
An amazing piece to add to my collection... and even more valuable as it comes with the personal story. I can imagine my mother and father, with their newborn... picking up a soon to become heirloom to pass many decades later to their son. Sigh, this will never leave my collection... it means too much to me!

Lovely design... 1 oz gold!!
Simple, but beautiful!
My folks did that a few years ago. Their reasoning was that when they die they don't want to leave piles of unorganized crap that we all have to search thru, as their parents did when they died. Several friends' parents are doing the same, so I think it seems to be a thing for many old folks these days. Of course I'm in Japan, so the stuff they saved for me has now joined the boxes of my stuff stored in their house.
Anyway, cool gold piece!
It is really nice to sit down and listen to the stories and the memories... especially as my father passed away before we managed to do this.
