Getting the seeds in!

Okay... we've never tried growing veggies from seedlings... so, this will be a bit of a hit and miss adventure! For this, I decided I would recruit my kids to help out... and they are on holidays anyway, and need to get out of the house as well.

So, first things first... decided what would go where... putting the packets in place, and then preparing the soil. Just watering it a bit so that it wasn't quite so dry at the top of the layer. There is a lot of water underneath, but perhaps not quite enough to get the seedlings going.

I think that next time, we will get ourselves a seed strip or something like that to help with the spacing of the seeds. It is really really hard to space the seeds when you are trying to pour them out of the packet... so, we do have clips of seeds this time. On the other hand, I'm not really sure what will make it to seedling stage, and what will progress further to growth... and what will actually be ending up to be edible. I'm sort of expecting a pretty damn high attrition rate!

I think for the next week, we really aren't going to see much... I have a feeling that we probably buried the seeds a little bit too densely and a bit too deep... but it was still a nice way to spend the morning with the girls. The food is a bit of a secondary thing!

.... and while I was out the back there... I had to start tidying up all the grass and weeds that love the overflow from the hot water and the reverse cycle heat pumps that dump water onto the ground! Sigh... never ending list of things to do... best to do it while I'm there with a few spare minutes!

Oee nice experiment! Curious to see what will come up out of it. Agree, the seed version can be a total hit and miss Here in the Netherlands as you know the weather for direct seeding outside is not really a winner so I do this mostly inside. When you see what comes out of it.... well a lot of it just doesnt sprout at all, so I always go big :D

Yeah keep checking every day and let the fun begin!

Well... the little sprouts have started, and the weather seems good enough here in Australia... but the problem is more to do with bugs and birds eating the little shoots!

You might be surprised. My biggest issue is bugs eating them before they grow! Grrr. I never have as much success at seeds although it does depend what they are. It's why I love self seeding plants like kale, lettuce and coriander! Give the heads a good shake and voila! They pop up everywhere. This week I planted garlic.

Grrr... yes, little bugs have started attacking the carrot shoots... not all of them, but a little patch so far. I suspect a snail, due to teh slime patch... but I couldn't find the little bugger.
