Garden Critters...
Now that I have had a cull of the spitfires with the Pyrethum spray, I have started to noticed that other little critters are appearing on the leaves of our plants... but I'm more than happy to leave them alone, as they aren't completely stripping the plants down. I'm assuming that the original overinfestation of spitfires out competed pretty much everything else that would want to chomp on the leaves, and I also wonder if those wicked eucalyptus filled spikes had anything to do with that either? Even if not, the sheer weight of numbers in the spitfires was always going to edge out anything else.
So, I sort of curious as to what sort of critter this one is...
... and I already know what this one was. In Australia, you sort of get used to having spiders around. They are mostly harmless... the little ones are the nasty ones, but these larger huntsmen spiders are enough to give you a bit of a jump in the morning. Our cars are parked in an open carport... and this huntsman was in the seal area of the boot of our little car.
It was discovered this morning by my wife, who promptly shut the boot door again... trapping it in the seal area. Her rationale was that it would stop it getting into the car... trust me, you don't want one of these dropping on you in the middle of a drive, even if it is harmless!
... and then she would just tell me about it when she got home. I asked if she tried flicking it off the car with a stick... and nope, she hadn't... awkward silence... so, I was delegated to do it. The original flick was disastrously unsuccessful, as it moved fast and I accidently knocked it into the car... but I was able to chase it out and into a bucket, where I put it in a far corner of the garden.
... and speaking of far corners of a garden. We had a snake wander through and into the neighbour's garage the other day. Thankfully it was a relatively placid (but poisonous...) that was quickly caught by a snake catcher. Phew... but it does remind me that we aren't in the harmless wilds of Europe anymore!
