Back to being an Amateur Gardener!

Oh the relief!!!... Taxes are done, and I've hit the big red button (well... blue/green...) and it is all sent on to the government to figure out now!
So, I can now get back to pottering in the garden and sorting out the various chores that had piled up whilst I was heads down in numbers and receipts and just trying to make sense of the tax system with the weird rules and words!

The first chore... planting new zucchini and tomato plants in these pots. I was talking with the kids, and we came up with the idea that we should plant heirloom varieties when we have our veggie garden beds set up. And I was going to suggest that we do the same for these temporary pots... however, my wife already had bought the little plants before I managed to suggest it to her as well. I figure that we can buy ordinary things at the supermarket, and that we should try growing more interesting tasty versions in our backyard instead!

Meanwhile, after lots of back and forth, we settled on kiwi fruit vines for the exposed area... the options were shadecloth or some sort of vine. Initially, I wasn't too keen on the vines (which my wife was...), but she explained that it would let in light during the winter and shade during the summer... and that had me sold! I just didn't want grapes or things that might draw in wasps like we had in the Netherlands, and so we eventually settled on the kiwi fruit. And apparently, these come in male and female varieties... of which you need one male per eight female ones... we only have space for three, so we were told to plant the male one in the middle.

... and along the front, we have three spots for a climbing rose. We have one... and my wife will pick up the rest at some point. I will also need to install trellises when they are a bit bigger so that they can climb up!

So, firstly clearing some of the pebble bordering so that I can plant in the kiwi fruits. We were told that the earth near buildings tends to be pretty bad... but given that our place was completely overgrown when we bought it, the soil isn't that bad... so, I don't think I will need to add too much stuff to it!

This will be the spot for the male... I had to get these into the ground soon, they were starting to look a bit wilty!

... for some reason, the female ones were looking especially wilty! But these were the taller ones, and they will eventually wrap around the the poles to climb up onto the wood beams at the top. I was just reading that the females are the fruit producers, but the males are necessary for the pollination.
I'll put in some poles tomorrow to help to reach that first little bit of the wood column, otherwise they will likely just flop to the ground under the weight of the new growth!

While I was doing this, I was clearing patches of unwanted grass that had crept into the garden beds... and even along the wall!

And this was the site for the climbing rose. I'm suspecting that I probably should already get a trellis up on the wall to help train it from the beginning.

But there is already a few little buds coming along and one little flower that should bloom open in the coming days!
Its great to be back in the garden again! I had no idea that I would miss it so much, I really like just getting out there and doing the little things... a couple of hours here and there, just to keep everything moving along! It really feels good!
