The Morning Show: a series from Apple TV that makes you think from macro to micro

I started watching The Morning Show because of Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon, since I love the way they both play, since always. I was looking for Friends, but I couldn't find it for free and it's not on Netflix Spain either.

A friend recommended Severance, and since I just had 3 months free of Apple TV, I decided to download the app.

Just when I was researching what was there, I came across The Morning Show, a series of which I knew little or nothing, but as I said, because of the actresses, I started watching it. It also stars Steve Carell, who I also like a lot, and Billy Crudup joins him among the male protagonists, who although I don't follow much and don't know much about his work, I could see a familiar face.

I thought it was a comedy and the truth is that I didn't read anything about the series, because I assumed that the cast guaranteed a good production.

Well, I was not wrong. The production is excellent, it's just not a comedy, although it has moments of black comedy you could say.

The Morning Show goes from the work structure to personal life. The approach is excellent and in its three seasons, although it has a common thread between them, each one deals with main themes.

This review takes all 3 seasons of The Morning Show, as I watched it almost non-stop.

The Morning Show: una serie de Apple TV que te lleva a reflexionar de lo macro a lo micro

Empecé a ver The Morning Show por Jennifer Aniston y Reese Witherspoon, ya que me encanta cómo interpretan las dos, desde siempre. Buscaba Friends, pero no pude encontrarlo de manera gratuita y no está tampoco en Netflix España.

Una amiga me recomendó Severance, y como justo tenía 3 meses gratis de Apple TV, decidí descargarme la app.

Justo cuando investigaba lo que había, me crucé con The Morning Show, serie de la cual sabía poco y nada, pero como les decía, por las actrices, la empecé a ver. Además actúa Steve Carell, que también me gusta mucho, y a él se suma Billy Crudup entre los protagonistas masculinos, que aunque no sigo mucho ni sé demasiado de sus trabajos, le veía cara conocida.

Pensé que era una comedia y la verdad que no leí nada de la serie, porque supuse que el elenco garantizaba una buena producción.

Bueno, no me equivoqué. La producción es excelente, solo que no es una comedia, aunque tiene momentos de comedia negra podría decirse.

The Morning Show va desde la esctructura laboral a la vida personal. El abordaje es excelente y en sus tres temporadas, aunque tiene un hilo conductor entre ellas, cada una aborda temáticas principales.

In the first season we could say that it mainly addresses the issue of abuse within the work structure, specifically sexual abuse suffered by different women at work by a renowned presenter from whom no one expects such a thing, and who denies having committed such acts.

It is especially about the impact this has on the victims, from the least severe to the fatal, and I especially like how they introduce the subject, showing how the system, instead of exposing what happened and accompanying those who denounce, makes the fact invisible and in exchange offers to cover it up with “awards”.

En la primera temporada podríamos decir que se aborda principalmente el tema del abuso dentro de la estructura laboral, específicamente abuso sexual que sufren diferentes mujeres en el trabajo por un presentador de renombre del cual nadie espera tal cosa, y quien niega haber cometido dichos actos.

Se trata especialmente el impacto que tiene en las víctimas esto, desde lo menos severo hasta lo fatal, y me gusta mucho especialmente cómo introducen la temática, mostrando cómo el sistema, en lugar de exponer lo ocurrido y acompañar a quien denuncia, invisibiliza el hecho y a cambio ofrece taparlo con “premios”.

From the beginning there is some prominence to the defense of women's rights by showing how they are ignored, but in the second season this is evident, since it is not only shown to defend those who suffered abuse, but also show how they suffer and the consequences they have to pay who somehow defends the accused, not because they want to erase what they have done, but because they feel an affection for that person, because they can not believe it, because they have not been able to be the protagonist of their aggressions.

The confusion felt by the protagonist, Alex in this case (Jennifer Aniston) is judged to the point that she ends up being practically condemned for feeling that way.

On the one hand they manage to “erase the aggressor from the map”, and on the other hand they erase her from the map, while at the same time they program an attack for not having spoken up, leaving her as an accomplice among women, but in reality she is nothing more than another victim who did not know how to act.

At the same time, in both seasons, the role of Bradley (Reese Witherspoon) is shown as a fervent defender of women's rights, since it is she who seeks to whitewash the situation and who does not care about any consequences as long as she does a job that really generates a change in society, since she herself chose her profession for that purpose.

Desde el principio hay cierto protagonismo a la defensa de los derechos de la mujer por medio de mostrar cómo son ignorados, pero en la segunda temporada esto se evidencia, ya que no se muestra solamente el defender a quien sufrió un abuso, sino que además presentan cómo sufre y las consecuencias que tiene que pagar quien de alguna manera defiende al acusado, no por querer borrar lo que ha hecho, sino porque siente un afecto por esa persona, porque no lo puede creer, porque no ha podido ser protagonista de sus agresiones.

Esa confusión que siente la protagonista, Alex en este caso (Jennifer Aniston) es juzgada al punto que termina siendo prácticamente condenada por sentir de esa manera.

Por un lado logran “borrar del mapa” al agresor, y por otro lado la borran del mapa a ella, mientras que paralelamente programan un ataque por no haber hablado, dejándola como una cómplice entre las mujeres, pero no siendo en realidad más que otra víctima que no supo cómo actuar.

Paralelamente se muestra, en ambas temporadas, el papel de Bradley (Reese Witherspoon) como una ferviente defensora de los derechos de la mujer, ya que es ella quien busca blanquear la situación y a quien no le importa ninguna consecuencia con tal de hacer un trabajo que realmente genere un cambio en la sociedad, ya que ella misma eligiço su profesión con ese fin.

However, the third season takes us a little further, and introduces us to the fall of a large company, showing how in the midst of a crisis the largest multinationals are able to “eat” smaller companies, and how this ultimately ends up affecting the personal lives of the people who are inside.

You have to have an image, you can no longer fight for what you really consider valuable, you have to respond and obey. And this leads to hypocrisies that touch the institutional and the personal. In fact, the series also addresses the issue of sexuality, whose approach is very interesting.

Sin embargo la tercera temporada nos lleva un poco más allá de todo, y nos introduce la caída de una gran compañía, mostrando como en medio de una crisis las multinacionales más grandes son capaces de “comerse” a las compañías más pequeñas, y como esto al final termina afectando a la vida personal de las personas que están dentro.

Ya hay que tener una imagen, ya no se puede luchar por lo que de verdad se considera valioso, ya hay que responder y obedecer. Y esto lleva a caer en hipocresías que tocan lo institucional y lo personal. En la serie, de hecho también se aborda el tema de la sexualidad, cuyo enfoque es bien interesante.

The series is complex and it is very likely that I will watch it again. It is as complex as life itself, as we unwittingly end up mixing our work life with our personal life, because we often spend too much time at work and aspects filter into one or the other side of the scale.

Sometimes we don't find that precious balance, and I would say it happens much more often than we would like.

Something strong that happens at work is certainly going to affect personal life, because we can't split the mind and we can't erase what happened yesterday, or two hours before we went home. That is a memory. The same thing happens if something happens in personal life, no matter how much effort we make and no matter how much we master the art of separating one life from the other, what happened is there.

La serie es compleja y es muy probable que la vuelva a ver. Es tan compleja como la misma vida, ya que sin quererlo terminamos por mezclar la vida laboral con la personal, porque muchas veces pasamos demasiado tiempo en el trabajo y se filtran aspectos hacia uno y otro lado de la balanza.

A veces no encontramos ese preciado equilibrio, y diría que pasa con mucha más frecuencia de la que quisiéramos.

Algo fuerte que ocurra en el trabajo, sin duda alguna va a afectar a la vida personal, porque no podemos dividir la mente ni podemos borrar lo que pasó ayer, o dos horas antes de volver a casa. Eso es un recuerdo. Lo mismo ocurre si algo pasa en la vida personal, por más esfuerzo que hagamos y por más que dominemos el arte de separar una y otra vida, lo ocurrido está ahí.

The series is excellent, at least from my point of view and from my tastes. I recommend watching it. If teenagers watch it, they should definitely be accompanied by a trusted adult.

La serie es excelente, al menos desde mi punto de vista y desde mis gustos. Recomiendo verla. Si la ven adolescentes, sin dudas tiene que ser acompañado de un mayor de confianza.
