"Marillenblüte" - Apricot Blossom in our Garden

avatar

( EN / DE ) Marillen, that's what we call apricots in Austria. Many think these are different fruits, but thats not true. Marille = apricot. It's only named different here in the southern regions than in the northern German area.

But we have a region called Wachau in Austria, where harvested apricots simply taste better than anywhere else on this earth! May sound incredible, but who ever had the pleasure to eat an apricot from this region, will understand...
I think the widespread opinion that marillen are something different from apricots comes precisely because they simply taste different, namely better.

The so-called "Wachauer Marille" is a protected designation of origin and may only be used by farmers from this region. Its special taste results on the one hand from the variety used, but on the other hand mainly from the climate that prevails there

The photos you see are not from the Wachau, but here from our garden. I live not in the Wachau, but in Styria, but we have two small apricot trees. The Graz basin edges, now all built up, were once full of vineyards and so this climate is actually also well suited for apricots ... if, yes, if there were not often these late frosts. Last year we were lucky and could harvest many apricots.

This year again they bloom so beautifully and the bees are also already very eager to pollinate the flowers. Now it remains to hope that climate change has at least one good thing and saves our tender apricots from frost.

As always, I hope you enjoyed my posting :-) Yours, B.

Marilla is well know around here as apricot variety. :D

Now I'm doubting that's even a variety or just foreign name. Unfortunately due to the sudden cold temperatures ours haven't fruited for 3 years :( fingers crossed this year we will enjoy them.

Yeah, they are way smaller than peaches, but that's the only ones we are mostly having here.
Buds are fully open, current weather pleases them, we are waiting to see will announced low temperatures harvest everything before us, as it was the case in the last years.

Would be shame, cause jam... Yum!

Well, I can't agree with you. The best appricots come from Goriška Brda, Slovenia. If/when you try them, you'll know why. 😎 😀 😋

That's right. Small hills, warm climate, mostly fruit, especially cherries, peaches and apricots. And grapes. One of Slovenia's seven wine regions.
