Baby-fully matched. CNF #110.

There are many wonders of the world and some more globally celebrated than some but nothing in this world beats the one wonder that even science cannot explain. In fact, it is the least celebrated wonder of the world except for the fortunate few who get to have a first hand experience.

The way that life spins its thread of mysteries makes it captivating to see what each day would bring. Here I was in my room, lying down with my face to the ceiling, having a pleasant reverie of the good old days when my phone's ringtone distracted me. Looking at the lit phone screen, I realized that it was a call from a coursemate of mine. We both studied at the University of Lagos popularly known as UNILAG to all and sundry and we were roomates. I majored in Biology while she majored in Botany.

”What could Beatrice be calling for out of the blue?” I thought to myself before reluctantly picking up the phone.

”Hello Becky, how are you doing? Long time o” she rattled into the phone in one breath.

”I'm doing well madam Beatrice. This one you called me today, hope there's good news because I know you hardly call me” I replied half chuckling.

”Are you a spirit? How did you know I called to bring good tidings? Anyway, I put to bed a beautiful baby girl three days ago but I'm still at the hospital and my husband is busy with work, so he can't accompany me”.

”What! Really!!, This is good news!!! I believe congratulations are in order dear. So who will be assisting you at the hospital when your hubby is not with you?” I asked her.

”This is where you come in Becky. I know that schools are on holidays now, so please could you come and assist me during the day for about two days until my sister gets here?”

”Are you kidding me right now? What if I'm not in the same city as you, how would you cope?” I replied, shocked at her request.

”I know dear, please help me out. These nurses have a lot on their plate and won't be able to assist me. Please, it's just for two days.” She pleaded.

”It is because of the baby that I'm willing to oblige you. Send me the address and I'll be there in a bit”

” You're the best, kisses” she responded with ecstasy before hanging up.

As if she had predicted my answer to her request, my phone beeped, signalling an incoming message. I opened the message and got the address to the hospital where she was. Having given my word, I nade the trip to the hospital.

”Good day miss, I'm here to see my friend in room 216. She recently delivered a baby. Please could you direct me.” I asked the kind looking nurse that was standing behind the reception desk.

” Welcome, walk down this way and take the first turn on your right. Room 216 is the second private ward. You will see the room number placed above the door”. She responded with a jelly melting smile. I almost thought of working as a nurse at that moment. I said a quick ”thank you” and made my way to room 216.

The ward wasn't hard to find but as I was about to knock, the heart wrenching cries of the little one got to my ears. I pushed the door open and immediately went into full ”mama mode”. I picked up the crying baby from her crib and rocked her back and forth gently and instantly, she stopped crying. It was almost incredible like I had magically shut her mouth. Her eyes were so small yet beautiful that I got lost staring in them. I took my time to examine the little bundle of joy in my arms and literally, my heart filled with warmth.

As if the baby was feeling the same way, she smiled. Oh my goodness, her little pink gums and lips made her face brighten up and become even more beautiful. Right then and there, I knew that this was a match made in heaven. I felt like angels were in the room smiling and nodding their haloed heads at us.

I was still there standing by the crib and admiring the ”little one’s” charm, when my friend came out of the restroom.

”When did you arrive?” She asked. Without turning to face her her, I replied ” some minutes ago” .

”Your baby girl is cute. Did you know she has a beautiful smile?” I asked Beatrice

”You mean she smiled at you? Hmm, all she does is cry, eat and sleep and this is her routine with me for the past two days. I haven't seen her smile. How did you do it?” she inquired

”I did nothing. I came in and met her crying, then I tried to pacify her and the next thing was a smile. I'm so blessed and you know what, she is going to be my goddaughter” I said happily to the amazement of my friend.

”Really, that's lovely. I didn't expect you two to hit it off so fast”.

”Well, we have and the bond is solid. To stake my claim, I'll give her a name now as her godmother. My name for her is Delight. How do you see it” I asked Beatrice who was trying to get settled in on her bed.

”It's a lovely name. When my hubby comes I'll ask him to add it to her name list” she replied and as if understanding all we were discussing, baby Delight gave a hearty giggle that stole my heart away.

It's been months and baby Delight is growing pretty healthy. I'm looking forward to spending the Christmas holidays with her.

Thanks for reading..Shalom

Babies should be added to the list of wonders of the world. As an uncle to many nephews and nieces who I've sometimes had to take care of, it is both a frustrating and incredible journey watching them grow. I don't have my own kids yet, but I've come to learn that the P in Parents should stand for Patience.

There are very tender babies that steal people's love immediately, I imagine that happened with you and the baby, an instant chemistry of tenderness between you.

Thanks for sharing your experience.

Excellent Friday.
