Black and white moods

As Promised! I'm back with this other drawing I was working on yesterday.


I'm quite pleased that I still managed to finish this within the day. My brain seems to have forgotten how it feels when you finish a drawing in just one sitting. It's a feeling that I missed though.


Anyways, I bought chalk for this one because I didn't have any at home. So the drawing I posted yesterday used chalk and I kind of enjoyed the smoothness and texture I got from that so I sat down and made this drawing just for the sake of exploring that medium a little more XD


I gotta admit though, it made me miss using charcoal a bit... so maybe I'll but a charcoal pencil again soon... maybe when I get rid of enough pens so that everything fits in my pencil case.


Anyways, aside from wanting to play with the chalk technique, I've really just been in a black and white mood lately. I think this is burnout somehow because everything feels so bleak and I've just been hibernating again. And I think this face really reflects the burnout I've been feeling lately

materials: Black paper, chalk, white gel pen

I mean, it gives me that cold and empty look when I look at it from afar, but when I get a closer look at what I made, I just get this sense of pride in pulling off this chalk technique and I really like it, so I think I might incorporate it more frequently in some dark drawings I make.


Oh, and it has that really nice opacity that's so hard to get from white gel pens.

So this is how my drawing progressed this time:

So i started off with the chalk to make that faint outline and then to work on the very light and minimal highlights

Then upon the addition of the white gel pen ink, it kind of blended in quite nicely and i kind of had to work this in layers because the gel pen fades into the chalk layer a little. But it made me happy to watch the layers pile up.

Like, with each adition of the gel pen layer, it kind of looks like the face is glowing a little and I really thought that was a cool effect I could utilize with some other color soon. So expect me to buy a set of colored chalk and maybe a few neon gel pens just for more experimental drawings like this XD
