Finding Her.
The sound of sirens filled his head as he found his way into the hospital building. His heart was in his mouth as he spoke to the receptionist who directed him to the ward he sought.
As he walked, his legs trembled as different thoughts filled his head. He remembered the happiness that overtook him before he left home, and now, just a call shattered everything...
Going into the elevator, he sighed deeply, looking at nothingness as the elevator sound brought him back to life. The moment he stepped out, a doctor came to meet him.
"You must be Mr. Daniel, please follow me."
Nodding his head, he followed the doctor to his office.
"We were able to save her, but I am sorry that we couldn't save the baby. The accident was severe, and it took lots of stitching before we could stop the blood. Your wife is in the recovery unit. You should see her soon after filling out some papers." The doctor said before excusing himself.
Daniel swallowed the lump in his throat as he thanked the doctor. After filling forms and paying. He found his way to his wife's ward.
Staring at her, he couldn't hold back his tears as he sank down, holding his wife's bed. He cried so deeply without a sound heard.
He looked lovingly at her before he kissed her cheeks. "We will be fine. This is not the end." Before his head found rest next to her.
The sound of a cough stirred Daniel from his sleep. Looking beside him, he quickly stood up and held his wife's hand. "Are you okay?" He asked before pressing a button to signal the doctor.
Ignoring her husband, Mary touched her stomach as tears filled her eyes. "Where's my baby?" She asked her husband calmly.
"Mary... I... you need to recuperate. Do you want to eat any..."
The sudden movement of his wife holding on to his shirt cut his statement short. "Dan, please, I want to see my baby...our son. Please tell me they were able to save him, please, Dan, look me in the eye and just tell me where he is...please." She cried, holding from her husband.
Before Daniel could speak, the doctor came in. "You have to calm down, Mrs. Daniel. I am sorry for your loss, but you need to let us check with you. Your health matters now."
"No!" She screamed. "Where's the driver that hit my car? I need him to bring back my baby. Somebody talk to me. Help me find him, I need my baby." In her quest to stand up, the doctor held her down before he called on the nurses.
"I am sorry, the driver's wound was severe, and we were not able to save him." The doctor replied.
Daniel watched as his wife cried. He felt helpless and useless as he held his heart. His mind reminded him of how lovey-dovey they were before he left for work. The words they said to each other filled his head.
"What name are we giving him?" Mary had asked with a smile. "How does Nathaniel sound? Hmm.. or should we call him Aaron or..."
...and he had remembered his chuckle. She always did that every day before he left for work. It was like a morning routine they do since they found out she was pregnant 3 months ago, and now this month made it her fourth month, and Daniel couldn't be happier.
His face shined with love as he watched her picking names for their child. "We have enough time to pick something he would say." and she'd hit his head with her petite hands. He loved that moment. He always did, but now...
Looking at his wife, all he saw was a stranger he had never met. He watched as the doctor added a content to her drip to put her to sleep.
"It'll take time for her to heal. She would be discharged the next day. She'll need therapy to get back on her feet, and we have a professional who can help." The doctor said before walking out.
The next day came in like a thief. Daniel could hardly get any sleep. When Mary woke up again, she didn't speak. She just looked at him and slept again. The look in her eyes was filled with sorrow, and it pained him to see that he couldn't comfort her.
*"The doctor came in again, but this time around, he was with a woman. "Please follow the drug prescription, and here is Mrs. Rosa. She's a profound therapist. You can talk to her."
"I would need to speak to her and if you'd like me to come to your place, I can do that too. Anything that can help her heal."
Nodding his head, he watched as Mrs. Rosa spoke to his wife. Tears filled his face as he noticed she wasn't responding. It felt like they were speaking to a wall.
*"It'll take some time for her to come back. You have a lot of work to do. Try making her comfortable, compliment her, and always stay with her. Assure her you are here, and I'll also do my best, too. Mrs. Rosa said before she left.
Mary was discharged from the hospital some minutes later.
She was put in a wheelchair to his car as he drove her home.
The moment they got home, the first thing that greeted them as they stepped into the room was the bicycle they had bought for their baby and themselves. They had gotten it a week ago to add to the list of things they'd do together when their baby is born.
He watched Mary's expression as she walked past it to the bed. "Welcome home, what would you like to eat, your royal highness." Daniel asked with a smile, trying to lighten up her mood, but no response was heard.
Days turned into weeks and weeks to months with therapy and all still, Mary didn't speak. It was like she lost her voice, and it pained Daniel each day as he watched her get more into depression.
It was like the therapy wasn't working. Nothing was. A place he once knew as home was now a house to him. It felt weird and very wrong. Unable to take the pressure anymore, Daniel walked into the room after Mrs. Rosa session with his wife.
His hand found the bicycle meant for him and his wife, and he brought them out. Walking up to Mary, he said, "Aaron… that was the last name you called him. He'll come back to us but not like this. You need to be happy for him to come. Let's ride this bicycle together and be happy. I know you blame yourself for going out that day. But, you go out every day to buy things and it wasn't your fault that you went out that day. Life just happened, and it isn't fair."
Sitting close to her, Dan continued, "I don't blame you. I am very happy you are alive. With you, we can make many Aaron's. Your womb is okay. There is nothing wrong with you. You are beautiful as ever, but you need to smile more to be more beautiful so that our babies will be very cute. We can still have that happy family we hope for." Pointing over to the bicycles he brought out, he added, "We are going to have a bunch of bicycles in our home and ride the field with our children like we've planned. Come back to me, Mary. I miss you. I miss your troubles, your dance moves, your smile and everything.".
Kissing her cheek, he added, "We made an oath on our wedding day that we'd be together in our happy and worse time, so, don't push me away for too long."
Tears filled Mary's eyes at her husband's speech. "I couldn't protect him." She whispered.
"You did well, Mary. He'll come back to us." Dan replied.
Hugging her husband, she whispered silently into his earlobe. "The last person to take his/her bicycle will be the one to wash it when we get back." And with that, she ran off to pick hers.
With a hearty laugh, Dan smiled. He had found his wife.

A very sad story, the loss of a baby is always tragic and painful, fortunately the woman with the great support of her husband was able to move forward and walk again towards a hopeful future.
Thanks for sharing.
Good day.
Yes, it is always tragic because the family is always expectant.
Her husband did well, and with him, she can continue living life.
Thanks for reading.
Daniel's words to Mary are just heart-wrenching. The way he's trying to bring her back from that deep sorrow is both heartbreaking and uplifting. I really hope they find their way back to happiness together.
I hope they do, too. It's not easy to lose someone you've been willing to meet.
Hi @balikis.
You wrote a very touching story. It must be very hard to lose a son you couldn't do but I liked what you said, "he will come back another time". And the bike was the best therapy for her.
Regards ⚘
Yes, the bicycle became her therapy with her husband's words. Life happens, and that doesn't mean we should give up on it.
