The sunlight at the top of Lhokseumawe Hill, Aceh, Indonesia, feels hot and burns the skin. The strong wind was unable to dispel the heat sent by the sun.

However, the hot weather did not dampen my enthusiasm and my friends from the Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI) Lhokseumawe City to train at the highest peak in Lhokseumawe City. We want to perform this typical Acehnese dance to welcome the anniversary of the Alliance of Independent Journalists, a journalist organization in Indonesia which is a member of The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) based in Brussels, Belgium.

We are not dancers. For this reason, we asked a professional choreographer, Raisa Agustiana, to train us in a short time. We made many mistakes, but we persisted in practicing every day, indoors and outdoors.

From Lhokseumawe City Hill, the view looks beautiful. Factory installations in Lhokseumawe City are clearly visible, as is the Malacca Strait, which is often passed by large ships. From the top of the hill, Jalan Medan – Banda Aceh, which crosses Aceh with North Sumatra, looks very small.

It was not wrong if we chose that location for shooting. I display 13 photos in black and white. Not all of them were dancing, some were relaxing after we made a mistake so the movements and video shots had to be repeated.

The Likok Pulo dance is one of the traditional arts originating from Aceh Besar, precisely in the village of Ule Paya, Pulo Aceh District. This dance was first born in 1845 by an Arab cleric who traded in the land of Aceh named Syech Ahmad Badrun and at the same time spread the teachings of Islam at that time.[]

Sinar matahari di puncak Bukit Lhokseumawe, Aceh, Indonesia, terasa panas membakar kulit. Angin yang berembus kencang tidak mampu mengusir hawa panas yang dikirim matahari.

Namun, cuaca panas itu tidak menyurutkan semangat saya dan kawan-kawan dari Aliansi Jurnalis Independen (AJI) Kota Lhokseumawe untuk berlatih di puncak tertinggi di Kota Lhokseumawe tersebut. Kami ingin menampilkan tarian khas Aceh tersebut untuk menyambut kegiatan ulang tahun Aliansi Jurnalis Independen, sebuah organisasi jurnalis di Indonesia yang menjadi anggota The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) yang berpusat di Brussels, Belgia.

Kami bukan penari. Untuk itu, kami meminta koreografer profesional, Raisa Agustiana, melatih kami dalam waktu singkat. Banyak kesalahan yang kami lakukan, tapi kami tetap tekun berlatih setiap hari, di dalam dan luar ruangan.

Dari Bukit Kota Lhokseumawe, pemandangan terlihat indah. Instalasi pabrik di Kota Lhokseumawe terlihat jelas, demikian juga dengan Selat Malaka yang sering dilalui kapal-kapal besar. Dari atas bukit, Jalan Medan – Banda Aceh yang merupakan lintas Aceh dengan Sumatera Utara, terlihat sangat kecil.

Tidak salah jika kami memilih lokasi itu untuk pengambilan gambar. Saya menampilkan 13 foto dalam bentuk hitam putih. Tidak semuanya sedang menari, ada juga sedang santai setelah kami melakukan kesalahan sehingga gerakan dan pengambilan video harus diulang.

Tarian Likok Pulo adalah salah satu kesenian tradisional yang berasal dari Aceh Besar, Tepatnya di gampong Ule Paya Kecamatan Pulo Aceh, Tarian ini pertama kali lahir pada tahun 1845 oleh Seorang ulama Arab yang berdagang ke tanah aceh bernama Syech Ahmad Badrun sekaligus menyebarkan ajaran Islam pada masa itu.[]
