Black and White Airport Stories: Monomad |
Travel always has many stories and many dimensions. Sometimes, because we travel too often, either for work or on holiday, we become insensitive to the surrounding situation, especially when we are in a hurry to catch a flight or have too much work to occupy our attention. In situations like this, even when we sleep we still think about work.
It's not surprising that in a place, sometimes there are people queuing to take photos at a photo spot, while there are other people who don't even look at that location.
I often experience both. For example, when you first land at a certain airport, there are many things that attract attention. Meanwhile, if it happens too often, such as at Kuala Namu international airport in Medan or Soekarno Hatta Airport in Jakarta, everything looks normal. There's nothing interesting anymore.
However, the long time at the airport makes it interesting to see the surroundings. For example, there was a friend of mine who fell asleep in a chair in the check-in room because the counter wasn't open yet, people were queuing to check in, and even the charging station became an interesting point (apart from being the most needed so many passengers didn't get a place). Likewise with shops selling souvenirs typical of a region which can be seen at airports everywhere in the world.
That's the situation and story that I tried to capture in a black and white monomad frame on a flight from Kuala Namu Airport in Medan to Soekarno Hatta Airport in Jakarta. This is a route that I have traveled hundreds of times, at least to Soekarno Hatta Airport.
I often see several objects and so far have not attracted much attention. But when seen from behind the camera from a different angle, everything looks different. It was no longer a cliche scene. Maybe that's how it is in another life, when we pay just a little more attention, everything will look different.
The fact that there is a long life at an airport, should make the airport no longer a boring place. Airport managers should make airports more attractive and make people feel at home in them. That means more supportive facilities and more beautiful views, both when photographed in color and black and white.[]
