Church of Saint Paul 📷 Malaga - Spain
The church of Saint Paul is located in the neighbourhood of The Trinity in the city of Malaga and its main feature is that it houses the image of Captive Jesus, emblematic in the city, where he is known as the Lord of Malaga.
It is a Catholic temple built at the end of the 19th century by the architect Gerónimo Cuervo.
Captive Jesus has a great devotion from the neighbours of the neighbourhood, but also, in general, from the whole of Málaga.
The Hermandad de la Salud (Brotherhood of Health), whose Virgin has her sculpture here, the Hermandad del Santo Traslado (Brotherhood of the Holy Transfer) and the Cofradía de Jesús Cautivo (Brotherhood of Captive Jesus) are all located in this church.
The neighbourhood where the church is located was first built in the 16th century and has evolved over time, as has the city. It is one of the oldest quarters of the city.
At that time, the area where The Trinity neighbourhood is located today had many fruitful orchards, as the river flowed freely through the area and irrigated them.
But the exact moment of the construction or emergence of the temple is very confusing, as there are numerous versions.
But what is certain is that, at the beginning, it was constituted as a hermitage, since its dimensions were not large and it was used to carry out the cult and was the base of the devotion in this neighbourhood, which by the way was very humble.
In the middle of the 17th century, the hermitage became part of the parish of the Santos Mártires and several brotherhoods and brotherhoods date from this period. For a long time it depended on this parish until finally in the 17th century the hermitage was declared a parish.
Its construction has a neo-Gothic style in its architecture and its architect carried out the work in 1873.
First the old structure, which was badly damaged by an earthquake, was demolished and then the new parish church was built. This work took approximately 20 years.
The style chosen was the one that corresponded to the moment in history and the construction of this church meant a before and after in the evolution of the neighbourhood, as it is the most monumental work in the neighbourhood and its tower can be seen from long distances, standing out enormously.
The exterior façade of the church is beautiful, with a large ornate door with many details and columns with pillars on both sides. Details throughout the structure.
The style of architecture used is Gothic for the rose window.
The large wooden doorway stands out, which is made of carved mahogany to which crests and pinnacles have been added. There are also large crosses.
On both sides of the gate are large windows with ogival finishes.
While the front façade is very striking, the side façades are also marvellous, with their circular windows and doors through which the church and tower can be accessed.
In the mid-20th century, some houses adjoining the parish church were removed and the parish church was extended, creating training schools.
The tower is one of the most striking architectural constructions in this church, as it can be seen from far away through the streets of the neighbourhood and it is beautiful.
It is fifty metres high, made up of three sections and has a quadrangular wooden pyramid at the top. Silver-coloured ceramics have been placed on top of the pyramid. It contains decorations in the form of fleur-de-lis.
A weather vane and a lightning rod stand out at the top. A tower that leaves no one indifferent due to the great amount of details it contains.
The interior façade has three naves separated by pillars. On the roof, the roofs with ribbed vaults, which provide great acoustics and lighting due to the large number of windows and stained glass windows.
The latter allow the sun to enter until the last hours of the sun, giving unique effects inside the temple.
The polygonal shaped altar is another of the architectural beauties of this church and we can also see the choir in the lower part.
In 2006 it was finished with some remodelling and restoration work on the interior and exterior of the church, especially the pinnacles, which were very deteriorated.
One of the most striking things is the way in which the light enters the temple, as I said before, and as the sun goes down, it can be reflected on the colours of the stained glass windows and the rays enter the interior.
It is worth mentioning the sculptures that can be seen inside, several sculptures of Christ, the image of the Virgin of Health, but the most remarkable is the image of Captive Jesus, to whom the neighbours and in general the whole city is very devoted.
The pilgrimages made with him and the Virgin by his side fill the neighbourhood with emotion. Whether you are religious or not, it is a very impressive sight to see.
These sculptures belong to the confraternity of the same name and are only removed from the church on the feast of Easter, when, together with the other confraternities of the city, various events are held for the occasion, accompanied by bands and large, long processions.
It was a visit that surprised me, especially because of the interior and the lighting, the many details and the style.
I hope you enjoyed this architectural beauty. Best regards to all and see you next time.

Wow! You have captured the architectural and aesthetic beauty of the church. The light outside and inside is excellent, giving the structure like a golden glow.

The church is really beautiful.
Glad that they did some restoration work to preserve the building!
Circular windows are a pretty rare, I think they look really cute from the exterior of the building! 😁

I have a very special relationship with the Romanesque style, although I recognize that I am able to enjoy the light and the search for the heights of Gothic that you have described and photographed so well. The figure of Jesus is really impressive for the emotion it conveys. I also really liked some of the photos in which the buildings look like ships moving through the sky. Best regards
Jesus Captive here is very representative, the people venerate him very much, I think he is the most important one in the city. And I love the architecture, the details, and the lighting was fabulous. Thank you very much @enraizar 😀

Menos mal que siempre he tenido mala reputación, jajaj; Buen fin de semana
It is an impressive and charming church. The tonality of the warm colors maintains a vital energy that makes you want to be there. The theme of the stained-glass is something representative of holiness and peace. The architecture of this church is exotic.
Hello Neruel! The truth is that if there was something magical in the place, a lot of peace and a particular beauty, thank you very much!😀
