Picking up the pieces after The Storm

avatar

It's been one hectic week with flood damage, tragedies and missing people here in Kwa Zulu Natal South Africa.

Who would ever think such a disaster would occur so suddenly and leave such devastation around, wreaking havoc to major infrastructures such as roads, electricity, water and ports, compromising the delivery of essential services.

I'm still trying to comprehend the power that moving water has and what a destructive force it can create.

So many have lost everything, it almost makes me feel guilty that I've come out unscathed, except, having no running water and a day or so without electricity, which is a miner detail compared to what others are going through.

My heart goes out to those who have lost so much... wish I could help them all...unfortunately, we can only reach out and help where we can...not so?

water team.jpg
I feel so sorry for the water board team in our area, working non stop through the night trying to fix the main pipes, the damage has been quite extensive, and the rain hasn't made it easy for them at all.
I believe some of the men haven't slept in 24 hours trying to get our water running again.

I'm afraid it's going to be quite awhile before things are working normally.
I think a lot of people, including myself have learnt patience in all of this...everyone is doing the best they can in this crises.

People have been quite amazing actually, reaching out to each other with love and kindness, sharing what ever they can.

My grandson said to me today... "Gran, this has been a crazy past two years...we've been through three crises, "the Lock down", "July riots" and now the flood disaster",....I told him that we'll get through it, and come out better and stronger people in the end.

We cannot sit on a heap of "self pity" and allow ourselves to become depressed...get up dust yourself off and continue the best you can.

Well!...we've been making the most of it and camping out, harvesting water from the gutters to flush the toilets and washing floors.

harvest water.jpg
Hubby harvesting water in buckets from the gutters.

It's amazing how many liters one can get from running water from the roof.
We definitely need a "Jojo" or two, seeing the weather scientists predict more of this kind of disasters, due to "global warming" or "climate change"... what ever they want to call it.
Omg....I hope they're wrong.

collage 2.jpg
Harvested water bottles every where in the house.

I've become very innovative in ways to shower with the harvested water, it's quite amazing how one copes in a crises like this.

I wont go into detail...I might just be censored from Hive Lol!

We've been getting drinking water from a bore hole on a farm near us as the stores have run out of bottled water.
Took a photo of some woody neck storks and Egyptian geese enjoying the wet weather in the entrance of the farm.

sky.jpg
Although the sun has come out and the sky's trying to clear, there are still heavy clouds hanging about ready to release it's load on us again.

the bitch.jpg
Oh yes!...then there is Lucy the "Bitch" oblivious to the catastrophe around her.
I mean.... "What the hell!....life is still great..."she's happy"

I know I wont be taking life for granted any more, I'm going to appreciate and enjoy what I have...and if I can share it with others?...I will.

I'm sure it's going to take awhile before things return to normal, there is so much planning for repair work and re-building to be done, it seems a bit overwhelming to me....I'm sure we have good engineers who will take up the task of rebuilding our beautiful KZN back to it's former glory.

As the saying goes.... pick up the pieces....clean up the mess.... do what we can and help those who need it the most, sadly (there's a lot of them) and continue on our journey through this beautiful planet...one never knows what's lying around the corner.😘

hehe Lucy is gorgeous and pups have a knack of knocking the self pity out of us.

Unfortunately, we are now harvesting the effects of the pollution and destruction to the planet we sowed.

Some people have been forecasting this for the past 50 years, Prince Charles even gave his first speech about pollution and the destruction we are doing to the planet which will come back and bite us in 1970, over fifty years ago! He and many others were ridiculed, and unfortunately they have been proved right.

I have seen the destruction nature can cause, living through two hurricanes that hit us when living in Florida.

Am so glad you are okay, but the lack of power and water also drums home how lucky we are to normally have these things, as there are many many millions in our planet who do not have power and running water on a daily blessing.

There is always someone worse off than ourselves, you are right we cannot help everyone, but we need to start with ourselves.

I am with you and feel sorry for all the water board and power company employees, they really do work round the clock, just like the firefighters do when we have wildfires.

As long as Lucy gets her food water and cuddles then everything will be fine 😁

Stay safe and I hope it is all back to normal for you real soon!

Thank you so much @tengolotodo you are right, we all need to start with ourselves. I could quite easily go off the grid. I've learnt so much in these past few weeks, we take to much for granted, we need to take stock on what we have done to hurt this planet, some how, I hope it's not to late, to try and fix it. Thank you so much for taking the time to read my post.
Go well be safe.

Your post echoes my feelings about the events from last week and my heart goes out to those who have lost so much! Now that the sun has come out, I find the tears just come from nowhere thinking of those who've lost loved ones, and still have to pick up the pieces.
But you're right, the community have been drawn together and are reaching out in the most amazing way!
I can just imagine how you're going to enjoy that first hot shower!
And now that power station blew up last night! Do you have power?

Yes my friend wr have power on and off, we're getting use to camping out now. We just have to be patient, the workers are doing the best they can. It's just to terrible seeing the devastation, Ange and the boys have gone to Celeste to shower and do washing, they're going back to Cape town on Friday, my heart is already breaking. Feel like going with them, but can't because the dogs. We just have to make the most of it. The bore hole where we were getting water from has dried up for now, can't get it from there any more.
Hopefully the water will come on today. Keep safe my friend,
