My Hobbies / Ladies of Hive Contest #71

(Edited)

Hello my Hivian friends, I'd like to share my hobbies and a few of my creations with you all.

I didn't have many hobbies as a teenager except keeping tabs on the latest fashions and music of the day with my friends.
I've always been a creative person loving all forms of art, according to some of my friends back in the day, a little wired.
After all, what would life be without the Arts.
I love going to the theatre instead of movies. I find one can connect with the actors on stage rather than sit and watch a movie, theatre is so much more fun.
After marrying an Artist and Sculptor, I became more aware of my artistic flare and started doing pottery which I soon developed a passion for.
The feel of the clay and working with it had such a therapeutic effect on me that I had to share it with others. I started teaching pottery to a group of ladies for awhile. It wasn't long after that, I began a class for children from 5 years to 12 years old.

It was hard work but very rewarding, seeing them burst with pride and excitement after creating their master piece, filled my heart with joy.
After awhile, I started experimenting with air drying clay, which I also loved to work with.

African Ladies
In making this picture, the clay was rolled out flat to about 1/4 inch thick, I sketched the ladies onto paper first, then lay the sketch on top of the clay and drew over the lines pressing slightly into the clay, then with a pallet knife cut out the indentation on the clay made from the sketch.
After cutting the shape out, one can work on the artwork, by smoothing around the shapes with a wet sponge, adding bits of clay for clothing, accessories, etc. building onto the clay, like dressing paper dolls. ("If kids still play with paper dolls"!) do they? Lol!
Once dry, I painted the figures with copper polish then arranged them on a masonite board painted with off white PVA paint.
Once satisfied with the arrangement of the picture, I used wood glue to stick it down, then sprayed with a transparent lacquer and framed it.
Our African people in South Africa are so colorful and diverse, one can't help but be inspired by them.

The Beatles "Abbey Road".
I enjoyed making this picture. Always been a fan of the Beatles .
I first painted the back ground on the board and stuck the figures of the Beatles on it, using same technique as previous picture.
I cheated and copied picture from the Beatles record cover "Abbey Road" their music always inspired me and still does.

Joseph's Coat of Many Colors
This one I did as a gift to my dear friend @lizelle where it is proudly displayed amongst her art collection on her wall in her lovely home.

Another passion of mine is painting with acrylic, I find when I'm painting, I become oblivious to the world and it's problems.
When I paint I don't like to be disturbed, I literally hibernate for the day with my soft music, paint brush and canvas, landing on another planet altogether, sometimes with a glass of wine or two, Omg!...it's wonderful.

Every painting has one's own story to tell, what ever one imagines it to be in what one sees in it, is one's very own story.

One of my other passions is writing. I've done some courses in creative writing and attended writing work shops. I've also written plays and a few stories, but never had them published, I don't think I've the confidence to do that. Lol!
But!... Blogging on Hive is building up that confidence, who knows!...maybe I'll pluck up the courage and publish my TV Script Sit Com called "Mr and Mss Management" I wrote a couple of years ago. Hehe!

Well my dear Hivian friends, this is my entry to Ladies of Hive Contest #71.
I hope you enjoyed it as much as I'm going to enjoy reading your contributions.

It sounds like you find peace and excitement in your hobby. I love the one of the girl by the river! Gorgeous.

I can almost feel the clay between my fingers - it's such a tactile thing. Do you find it therapeutic too?

I once loved painting. It was during the sweetest years of my life - Highschool years. Well, I was back then really creative, fun, and carefree. I spend hours and hours in my room with just me, my canvas, and oil paints. I love seeing your art. It has a nostalgic feeling. This specific blog make me want to share my current hobbies as well. It sounds fun. Can I join?hehe

Love your pottery work @arywink, the little figurines are fabulous. Do they sell well, that is if you sell them.
Isn't it the way that we meet our true love in the right place whether it is hobbies or our professional life. My husband was a principal of a primary school in the Education Department and I was a guidance officer come educational psychologist in the system.
