The London Beer Flood of 1814 - "A Wave of Porter 15-feet high Swept into New Street" - Beersaturday 237
Being in the right place at the right time is what makes life interesting, and there is no better place to be than in front of a tsunami of Imperial Porter.
Spartans seek their whole lives for an opponent worthy of giving them an honourable death in battle. Good for them, but a bit messy in my opinion. Now, drowning in 32 tons of beer, that's more like it! In fact, I'm struggling to think of a better way to meet my maker. Just imagine the look on St. Peter's face as you arrive at the pearly gates dripping in ten-month-barrel-aged Imperial Porter. Instant MVP status and a good shot at being awarded the title of Patron Saint of Beer.
While the Beer flood of 1814 claimed a few lives it is still a story that offers some dark humour and irony, which is great for those who enjoy that kind of thing. For example, during the "disaster" there was an Irish family who were attending a wake. During the wake the entire family were swept away when 32 tons of stout came crashing through their house. For those who are familiar with the Irish and the goings-on during an Irish wake, you'll know that they were already doing their best to drownd themselves in alcohol well before the stout crashed through the wall. Seems God has a good sense of irony.
And then there's the predictable outcome of the rescue mission that saw the would-be heroes forgetting their heroic duties. Instead of giving aid to the stricken victims of the flood, these victorian good samaritans gave in to temptation and spent most of the afternoon scooping up all the free beer! Well, what did you expect? It is England after all...
To hear about this event in its entirity, take a moment to watch the video below. And then, once you've done that, you can carry on reading about today's feature beer 🙂
Inkeeping with today's British theme, I have decided to choose a beer the boast a great british hop.
Brithop is made at Buxton brewery and is certainly a more traditional English ale. As soon as I poured it into my favourite pitcher I knew what I was getting, a crisp, refreshing beer with plenty of fizz. Amber in colour and topped with a classic white foam. Brithop is a beer that would be great while at a barbeque or while on holiday lounging by the pool. Unfortunately, it's as cold as an eskimos nose right now in the UK, so probably not the best time for a summer beer. Nonetheless, you can't knock a classic and that's how I'd catagorise this beer. I can't say I'll be rushing back to buy another but at least it has encouraged me to stick with the winter stouts until the weather picks up.
Brithop gets a 5 out of 10 for taste and I'll give the same rating for the can art. A lazy beer for a lazy summer day.
As promised in my previos #beersaturday post, I offer up some beer-knowledge taken from the good book of beer. Let us all be enlightened and better informed on the subject of beer.

All hail the ale! And a happy #beersaturday to you all. Thanks for joining me.
For next weeks #beersaturday, I would like to invite @nonameslefttouse to write a post about beer using no less than 3 pictures.

Awe man. I don't want to write a frickin' beer post. Why you gotta make me work...
I though that sharing a beer might be a good idea after spending all that time chatting so seriously. Anyway if there’s beer involved it can’t be work 😎
I appreciate the offer and the gesture and all that good stuff. Community driven themed posts though. I don't normally do that kind of stuff. In the early days I entered some contests. Since then though I've basically stuck to developing my brand and focusing on that. Plus I rarely drink. LOL I'd be faking it if I did a beer post.
Thanks for the mention and inclusion though.
Hey man, if it isn’t your thing that’s fair enough. I’ll have an extra one next week just for you 🍺🍺
Sounds a real middle of the road beer that... At least it was drinkable
It was a little disappointing but a beers a beer 🍺
