The last Cannes Film Festival left us with a pleasant surprise for the film community: a letterboxd user won the gold medal. Sean Baker is a great director and I love the fact that he has been recognized with this award, as he had already been nominated for an Oscar for The Florida Project, but, beyond that film, his whole filmography is really interesting. His whole filmography is really interesting. It is so interesting that he has a film entirely shot with an Iphone, and the truth is, it is a great film. When I heard about that I thought about a lot of the films that have been shot on a shoestring budget and it not only encourages me, but it also excites me to think about how many people could pull something like that off.
And I think about it a lot because, as a film lover, I've been on several short film or music video shoots. It's really interesting and many times people are limited by the budget, when the truth is that creativity goes beyond the limits of money in many aspects. Christopher Nolan made his first movie with only six thousand dollars, an insignificant figure for the mega blockbusters he is making now, can you imagine the director of Batman, Oppenhaimer and Tenet making a movie with less than ten thousand dollars? Well, there's really no need to imagine it, and that's the point. Those scenarios exist and can be fulfilled with enough will.
One of the best science fiction films, acclaimed for its physics and mathematics, in how it changed the way we look at time travel and its incredible storytelling is Primer, a film that was directed by an engineer and had a budget of seven thousand dollars, money that had been saved by the director himself (who is also an actor, writer and producer) in order to make the film. The film grossed eight hundred thousand dollars, making it a total success. This changed me a bit inside, honestly, as it made me understand that I didn't have to choose one thing or the other, since I love engineering but I also love movies; to see that an engineer made such an amazing movie left me in love. This doesn't just happen in engineering, George Miller, director of Mad Max, wanted to make Mad Max because he wanted to make a biologically accurate movie, as he is a doctor. However, that's another story....
Now we are talking about the low budget in films, and although there are several examples, the first short film by Martin Scorsese, who only needed one person, a mirror and a razor, comes to mind. An extremely interesting short film where you could already see a little of the director's intentions, but the low budget in films, although it may seem paradoxical, does not only happen in independent films. The Daniels, directors of the Oscar winning film Everything Everywhere All At Once saved a lot of budget in special effects since they learned with youtube tutorials, and, an incredible blockbuster film such as The Creator was filmed with a camera of no more than 8 thousand dollars, which emphasizes what I'm trying to say: a well thought out idea is better than all the money in the world, and no matter how much your budget is, your will can make you something bigger than you think.

El último festival de Cannes nos dejó una grata sorpresa para la comunidad cinéfila: un usuario de letterboxd ganó la plama de oro. Sean Baker es un gran director y me encanta el hecho de que se le haya reconocido con ese galardón, ya que antes ya se le había nominado al Oscar con The Florida Project, pero, más allá de esa película, toda su filmografía es realmente interesante. Es tan interesante que tiene una película enteramente filmada con un Iphone, y la verdad, es una gran película. Al enterarme de eso pensé en muchas de las películas que han sido filmadas con poco presupuesto y no solo me anima, sino que también me entusiasma pensar en cuantas personas podrían llegar a hacer algo así.
Y lo pienso mucho porque, cómo amante del cine, varias veces he estado en rodajes de cortos o de videos musicales. Es realmente interesante y muchas veces las personas se limitan por el presupuesto, cuándo la verdad es que la creatividad sobre pasa los límites del dinero en muchos aspectos. Christopher Nolan hizo su primera película con solo seis mil dólares, una cifra insignificante para los mega blockbuster que está haciendo ahora. ¿Se imaginan al director de Batman, Oppenhaimer y Tenet haciendo una película con menos de diez mil dólares? Bueno, la verdad no hay porqué imaginarlo, y ese es el punto. Esos escenarios existen y se pueden cumplir con la suficiente voluntad.
Una de las mejores películas de ciencia ficción, aclamada por su física y matemáticas, en cómo cambió la forma de ver los viajes en el tiempo y su increíble forma de contar una historia es Primer, una película que fue dirigida por un ingeniero y que tuvo un presupuesto de siete mil dólares, dinero que había ahorrado él mismo director (quien también es actor, escritor y productor) para poder hacer la película. La película recaudó ochocientos mil dólares, lo que la convierte en un éxito total. Esto me cambió un poco por dentro, sinceramente, ya que me hizo entender que no tenía por qué escoger una cosa u otra, ya que me encanta la ingeniería pero también me gusta mucho el cine; ver que un ingeniero hizo una película tan increíble me dejó enamorado. Esto no pasa solo en la ingeniería, George Miller, director de Mad Max, quiso hacer Mad Max porque quería hacer una película biológicamente acertada, ya que él es médico. Sin embargo, esa es otra historia…
Ahora estamos hablando del bajo presupuesto en películas, y a pesar de que hay varios ejemplos, también me llega a la mente el primer corto de Martin Scorsese, quien solo necesito a una persona, un espejo y una navaja. Un corto sumamente interesante dónde ya se podría ver un poco las intenciones del director, pero es que el bajo presupuesto en las películas, aunque parezca paradójico, no pasa solamente en películas independientes. Los Daniels, directores de la película ganadora de Oscar Everything Everywhere All At once ahorraron mucho presupuesto en efectos especiales ya que aprendieron con tutoriales de youtube, y, una increíble película blockbuster cómo lo es The Creator fue filmada con una cámara de no más de 8 mil dólares, lo que recalca lo que estoy queriendo decir: una idea bien planteada es mejor que todo el dinero del mundo, y sin importar cuánto sea tu presupuesto, tu voluntad puede hacer de ti algo más grande de lo que crees.
