Upgrading my Photographic Equipment - Why I think I found the Perfect Lens (for me) 🔭
From knowing a few photographers (mostly digital), I know that for many, the best equipment will always be the one that comes out next year and they almost always see themselves as behind the times.
The best camera of the year XXXX will not be good enough for them the following year and so on... I think that in professional cases and very specific needs, this can be justified and understood. But giving in to the pressure of a milieu is also playing into the hands of the brands and companies that distribute new products piecemeal in order to continue to function. This is understandable in a capitalist world, but less so when everyone wants to explain to us that resources are limited - which, by the way, I am already convinced of !
In this article, I'll tell you why I chose this new lens rather than another one, but for a quick look back, you can read this article about the camera (a Nikon D5500) I bought a few months ago and which you'll find here.
I received this lens only two days ago and I am far from having tested it thoroughly yet, but I wanted to give you a little preview of it anyway.
As you can see from the box above, it is a Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM C suitable for Nikon mounts. Here are the few pictures I took with the 35mm of my camera during the unpacking...
It's a stabilized lens and has an internal motor for cameras like mine that don't have one in the body. But let's get to the reason for this purchase...
I wanted a lens that had more focal length than the 18-55mm kit lens and that was brighter.
These 15mm already make the difference for the few portraits I was able to take. For the light, the previous zoom opened at 3.5 and this one at 2.8.
I know that fixed lenses perform better and are generally cheaper than zooms for the same performance.
This is of course something I took into account when researching, but after a few months of using it, I realized how I like to take photographs. I'm not a studio photographer and I don't want to carry around a huge bag. Everything has to fit in my little 3L bag. It's not much, but everything has to fit :)
I wanted a lens that was very versatile and allowed me to do (almost) everything.
I also wanted it to be stabilized in case I take images in low light as it happens to me especially in museums. Also and to come back to the previous point, I do a little of each type of photography... even if very modestly ^^ !One day I'll shoot buildings and more architecture, the next day a visit to a dark museum (or not), the day before it will have been a recipe report and a fortnight later I'll do a hike or a gardening tutorial.
Finally, and even if I could expose other criteria, I wanted not to spend too much money (even if for some it is already huge) in the current context and with the idea of perhaps one day going to full formal - even if this will probably not happen for some years...
I believe that it is also successful and you will see it by doing your research because the prices which are indicated in the comparison which follows are not exact. Here we are more between 250 and 350€ second hand depending on the condition of the lens. For others approaching, we are not far from the double.
Yes, another important precision, this lens does not exist new anymore, but I was lucky enough to find one labelled "Like new" on the MPB website. So we're in the high end of the price range....
These are the objectives I compared on the Versus website. The information is generally quite comprehensive, the four screenshots are from their site.
I'll let you delve a little deeper into the technical data, but what else can I say except that it wasn't because this lens was presented as the "winner" of the comparison that I chose it... More than a hierarchy, I was looking for a comparison and that helped me make my decision.
In this part of the article, I have put some sample images taken at home so that you can get an idea with the different maximum focal lengths. First 17mm then 70. For the ones that follow, it's a bit out of order :)
It also gives me the opportunity to share with you some of the places we love, such as our pepper and spice rack...
The settings are not good at all on some of these shots and I must admit that as I was in my handholding phase, I was not paying much attention to them... But I count on your indulgence !
Here, my silk scarf of the moment at 17mm...
At 35mm without having moved...
And then at 70mm to finish. The following is the last one and I think I could have done without it too, but it's my book of the moment... A rather complete and fascinating gardening book !
Another advertised capability of this lens is the ability to do macro photography. This will still take some practice, but I think I'll have fun testing it :)
Voilà, that's about it for this report on why I chose this lens !
If you have any advice or feedback, I would be delighted to hear it ! Thank you for your visit and for taking the time to read this book, which I hope you will find interesting :)
Have a great day and see you soon,
✌️
✌️
You have a cool toy there :) Enjoy!
Thanks you ! I’m impatient to try it in a future outing and in real conditions :)
New accessory for better photoshoots 😊..
Indeed, can't wait to try this one 😉 !

Happy Tuesday 👋🏻😘
Yeaaah ! Was glad to find a second hand one that isn't to used as well :)
Have a happy Wednesday dear @littlebee4 😘 ✌️
Very cool.
Thanks a lot, happy weekend 👋🏻😊😘
Thanks you 😘 !
I hope you're doing well ✌️
You are welcome @anttn
I’m soooo busy hahaha but I found during the weekend a rental. So I have a place to go to in May 😎
Now plan the rest and movers and pack hahaha 😜
Have an awesome week 😘
Oh yeah ? You’re already ready for an other move ? I’m quite impressed by that, impossible for me to move like this..!
Seven years we occupy the same flat and in the first time, it was planned to last only three years 😂 !
Courage for planning and organizing everything, will you go in a more sunny place ?
I wish you a great Wednesday 🍀✌️🌟
Yep, I have to… as the residency was refused. So have to leave the UK. Can’t overstay, what would visit the in-laws in the future complicated.
The move is early May. Pick up stuff is end of April. So lots to do… hehehe 🤭 and I will be away for 2 weeks next weekend. So can’t do anything than 🫣
I so wished I could say that. Staying somewhere even for more than a year. At the moment it looks like 2 or more moves a year for a while hahaha looking back.
Believe me, I am so done with it… I’m tired.
Thank you so much @anttn 😊 nope… same weather. As that country is the only one left for both of us where we don’t need visas.
Thanks a lot. Have a wonderful Thursday!
What ! How could it be ?
I hope everything will go for the better for you 🍀🤞 !
Hope you're enjoying this weekend 😘
Yep… don’t ask. They even (the government) helped me what to fill in, when to apply last year etc. and now they say nope… we refuse you are too late.
Thank you so much, let’s hope this new country will be the place to settle down. There I don’t need a visa luckily.
Thank you so much, we had our last visitors, friends from London here. It was lovely.
Hope your weekend has been great too.
Enjoy the new week 😘👋🏻
That’s even more weird.!! Strange people !
I hope too for you the next one will be the good for a moment. Why not France lol ?
The weekend went nicely here with a balanced ratio of pleasure and duties in the house, I even went to a wedding hehehe :)
Take care dear @littlebee4 and enjoy the new ahead as well ☀️🍀✌🏼
I know… it’s weird. People are indeed strange. Don’t think they even looked properly at my application.
But… hey… their loss now. 😉
If all goes wrong in the next country, it will be France probably hahaha 🤣 or….? Who knows, but I hope all will be fine this time. I don’t see any reason why it wouldn’t. As both of us can live there with our passports. It is as pretty as where we are now. And a very temperate climate. A bit warmer than the highlands of Scotland. No extremes in any season. So good to grow veggies 😎
That’s a nice combination. And even a wedding. Sounds like lots of fun.
I will my friend… I will. Up to new adventures 😊
Take care @anttn have a lovely week. 😘
Good way of thinking... I like that 😉 !
Seems perfect so, it may just be a bit tiering to have an other move, but in the end, if you can be better 🤞 !
I had some difficulty to catch sooner, I hope you're doing good !
Wish you a very enjoyable weekend in perspective 😘
Yep, only way to make sense of it hehehe 🤭
That’s how I think, looks like it will be even better in some ways. So up to new adventures 😁
No worries my friend.
So busy now… next to packing I had to drive down south in the weekend, 12 hours over 2 days.
Now I’m helping the in-laws with tiling of their floors. Handmade terracotta hexagons. Lots of work hahaha none is the same size, thickness or angles… !LOL
Will be great when finished. Will be here 2 weeks and then drive north again over 2 days. When home. I have 10 days left to pack and move.
Hope your week is going well. I will try to catch up here and there… so forgive me when I reply late 🤓
Have a nice week 👋🏻☀️

Belle journée à vous ✌️
Looks like we're in for some amazing photos of the new toy.
Can't wait to see pictures taken with it.
Indeed, I look forward to try it soon :) I hope it will satisfy my expectations, but I am rather optimistic about it 😊
Have a good day ✌️
Such a cool review. I recently bought my first camera Wich is a Sony Zve10 and still having fun with the basic lens 16-50mm. When I finally squeeze it I'll try to look for something more fancy but at the moment it's ok. Thanks for sharing
Thanks you @vjap55 !
I think too it's rather fine for the beginning and that it's usually recommended not to rush to buy more in the first time... I wanted the combination that would allow me to make the widest range of images in relation to the different contexts and I think I've found the right one :)
Thanks you again, I wish you a good day ahead ✌️
Such a long post !LOL but wonderful photos indeed!

Haha, I can make it even longer if you prefer lol ^^
It's true that in the digital age, there is a constant push to upgrade equipment to keep up with the latest technology. At the end of the day, choosing the right equipment for your specific needs and investing in high-quality products that will last for many years can be a more sustainable approach. I'm interested to hear about your decision-making process for choosing a new lens and look forward to reading your article. From the first test photos, it seems to me that you have made a really good choice, I can't wait to see some nice posts with the new equipment.
I first tried it yesterday, you can see the result on today's post :)
It fits perfectly to my use and I'm quite satisfied about the colors and quality. The only thing is maybe the massive distortions at 17mm !!! The precedent lens was a Nikon so I could use the distortion reduction in the settings... Here with the Sigma, seems that it's not possible. But I do that in post production 😉
Thanks you for passing by dear @stea90, I hope you're doing well lately ✌️
Then also when we'll buy a new camera we'll check your posts @anttn Thanks a lot, best+!
That's kind of you 😉 but there is a lot of better photographers than me on the chain hehe :)
I've been searching for macro lens but I can say that it's really expensive. I have a Nikon D5100. Thanks for your review about the sigma lens.
You're welcome ! I prefer to tell you that this one have the mention "Macro" but it's more a zoom and not really specialized for closeups :) I wish you a "late" welcome here one Hive... hope you enjoy Paris as well, we're neighbors too 😉😇
I see. That's why I am confused if it's really, a real Macro. XD
Thanks for the late welcome. Currently, away from Paris. But it's difficult to get around Paris when there are kids. Hehe!
Yeah, it's not too bad at the same time, but not a real macro for sure !
I can imagine that ^^ !
Have a good evening ✌️😇
Good evening!
Thanks ✌️😘
