Around St John's Cathedral and the Fourvière Basilica in Lyon
Hello dear friends and Hivers, today I'd like to take you on a little tour of Lyon, which is where I was last week. It's the city where I grew up, so I can say, without boasting, that I know it pretty well !
But today, this tourist walk will only cover a few hundred meters, just one kilometer ! Here we are facing the Basilica of Fourvière, perched on the hill of the same name. This edifice, which overlooks the city and can be seen from many different places, was dedicated to the Virgin Mary after Lyon was saved from a plague epidemic. Construction began in 1870 and the basilica was finally consecrated in 1896.
The bridge that takes us there is the Palais de Justice footbridge, which is conveniently just across the river Saône. But that's not a visit for today !
Once again, the Basilica can be seen through the trees, almost all of which have been stripped bare. We are now a little further downstream on the same quay, and another imposing building is taking shape...
It's the cathedral of St-Jean-Le-Baptiste, a much older building, dating from 1175 to 1480. It took almost 3 centuries to build, which is not very long for the time, but it does tell us a lot about the perseverance of the people at the time !
As we make our way towards the cathedral, we are also getting closer to the hill, and we can also make out on the right a sort of Eiffel Tower, which is indeed a tower built by the engineer and still used for telecommunications.
But the more medieval-inspired tower in the foreground is that of the library building in the St-Jean district.
Here we take a closer look at the different architectural styles of these buildings, with the second image showing the imposing double bell tower of the cathedral.
You can really feel the light fading as the day draws to a close and, as it does so, it becomes brighter in its final moments on the facade of the building !
Details of a richly carved doorway in the square opposite the cathedral...
The basilica continues to dominate the scene...
And here's the square in front of the cathedral. This is St John's square, named after Jesus' cousin who baptized him.
This fountain in particular is full of symbols linked to water and therefore to Christian baptism...
And there it is, the Gothic facade ablaze with its last fires ! Apparently, because of the time it took to build it, part of it was built in Romanesque style, but the rest is Gothic.
Another thing is, it's also too late to go and have a look inside. But that's for another time !
I'll leave you with this last image of the central rose window. It should also be noted that for this visual walk, I was only equipped with my camera and a single lens, a 35mm, which is why I wasn't able to get as close to the details as I would have liked !
Thank you for your visit and I hope you enjoyed it. Have a great week !

I thought you were Parisian 😊 Never been to Lyon even though it's much closer to us than Paris. Looks like a nice place to visit 😊
Have a lovely day!
Haha ! I'm even not from Lyon, more south near Valence in the Drôme region 😉
The good thing there is that the city is not too big, so going from a point to another is not a problem :)
Thank you, I hope you're doing well 😘
