Among the Collection of Egyptian Antiquities of the sculptor Auguste Rodin
Here we are, back in the Invalides district on the left bank of the Seine, where the Biron mansion houses the Rodin Museum, as it was one of the last places where the sculptor lived and worked. We all know Rodin's famous sculptures, such as "The Thinker" for example, but it is less well known that the sculptor was a collector of Roman, Greek and especially Egyptian antiquities.
This tour therefore focuses on one aspect of Rodin's life. To get a broader view of his work and the museum dedicated to him, I recommend a visit to this quite complete article. This will help you to see things more clearly :)
But let's get this tour started !
We start with the work "Fugit Amor " and I might as well tell you from the outset that there are more antiques in this exhibition than works by Rodin, but I think the balance is quite good. Anyway, I'll let you judge for yourselves !
Some elements on a life-size photographic background with the sculptor at work.
These are the showcases that display the smallest elements of his collection. Rodin worked a lot with the idea of fragments of the body or ideas.
Here, a collection of funerary masks more of Latin origin.
Two objects I particularly liked before moving on to the next room... A representation of the god Thoth, the god of scribes and wisdom and a small bronze stele with Horus, the god of the god Osiris.
This is the room where we find the perspective with Rodin's works and his antiquities. The sculpture of the head emerging from the marble block is entitled "Thought".
The visit continues with more of these sculptures, always so lively and delicate, and the comparison with these rather rigid statuettes.
I like this display case very much because it contains the canopic vases, which were used to contain the viscera of the deceased and were topped with a lid in the shape of an animal or human head depending on the part of the body contained. If you look closely, you will also find several plaster proofs and small moulds that Rodin used to take parts of existing sculptures.
Here, a sculpture of a lioness placed in front of a reproduction of its position in the sculptor's studio at the time. In the end, I think it works quite well, don't you ?
Presentations of small sculptures and bas-reliefs are more dramatic than elsewhere, with stronger contrasts.
Here, another display case that I remember liking with these wooden carved elements representing servants and a small figurine of the god Anubis.
We also find this passion for fragments and on the third element on the right, a slightly funny pose ^^ !
Here we are in another room with a long wall of half-carved bas-reliefs decorated with hieroglyphs.
Another view of this room which was among the largest in the exhibition. We find in particular the sarcophagus of a woman called "Nana" who was a scribe in a temple.
Several new fragments of sculptures or already completed sculptures by Rodin. Studies of women's torsos, as you can easily see.
New fragments of different elements, touching in their sensitivity and simplicity. An engraved duck accompanied by the sun and in the second image in the centre, small heads of women and children carved in stone.
We will finish with these sculptures and bas-reliefs with for the last two, the god of the hearth Bes and a small Horus standing and sculpted in limestone which seems quite soft.
Voilà, that's all for today !
I hope you have enjoyed this short article without too much text and which leaves room for imagination and the evocative power of images ! Thank you for your visit :)
I wish you a very good day, see you soon,

Not an ounce of AI in this article.
Please take into account that all these images are mine, taken with a Nikon D5500 and an 18-55mm lens.

Congratulations, your post has been added to Pinmapple! 🎉🥳🍍
Did you know you have your own profile map?
And every post has their own map too!
Want to have your post on the map too?
Awww, this is a gift for me. I've been there years ago and lost all my photos from Paris. I love Rodin's work and was happy to read about his life later. It's an artist to admire to have the courage to go against the trend of those time and try to present the human body as it was. I hope to go back one day and visit what I can.
Best reward for me 😇 !
How did you lost your pictures, was it from hard drive issue ?
I assume you saw the link in the article, there's much more of the permanent collection :) I also love the work of Camille Claudel, even if their relation seems so passionate and tinted with the classical machisme at this time. Not so much by Rodin than by other men...
I hope you'll have the occasion to come back 🤞
Have a good evening
Yes, my hard drive died and I thought I had the photos saved, but I didn't. Took me 2 months to process the loss, but life goes on and we move on. I have the memories in my head :)
I think I saw a sculpture about Camille at the Musée d'Orsay. It was clay if I'm not mistaken, with a big, floral hat. But as the photos are lost, I'm not sure.
Ouch, that must have been so bad..! I agree about head memories, the more everything become digital, the more it's important :)
Almost the same happen to me, I fell asleep in the train and when I woke up, well... there was no more smartphone or computer.. Haha, you can imagine how angry I was ! Four years or so of my life not well backup disappeared...
I will go to Orsay in June for you to investigate a bit about this particular sculpture :)
Truly amazing antiques, Egypt is known for its history and incredible antiquities, I love antiques like the mummy storage
I'm glad you enjoyed those 😇
Thanks for visiting !
Wow.. Those truly look like old sculptures.. I like the wooden ones the most.
I've to say that except those from Rodin himself, the wooden are my favorite too :)
I'm glad you enjoyed your visit !
It is amazing, really. The arms of "Nana" is very long :)
Indeed 😂 That was quite the esthetics back in the days ^^
Thanks you for visiting !
I remember my last visit to Paris, unfortunately I didn't get to see this museum, my god, Paris is fascinating and huge, you need a few (many) days to see it.
When it comes to Egyptian antiquities you have already captured my attention.
Oh, it was a temporary exhibition so you didn't miss it :)
But the Louvre will stay there for your next visit, I hope that this one will not be to far away 🤞😇
Have a good day dear @triplug !
Thank you @anttn.
You're welcome 😊 !
Have a good weekend ahead
