Hive Open Mic #108 - Ode to Billy Joe (Bobbie Gentry)
Bobbie Gentry's classic song has been having people scratch their heads ever since its release in 1967!
The Mystery
With the story set in Mississippi it's always carried that bit of mystery with it and for that reason makes a great song for this week's theme!
Did the protagonist and Billy have a relationship?
What did they throw off the bridge? What did the preacher really see?
Bobbie Gentry leaves us guessing..
Indifference
However, it would appear that the story was really more about the indifference people can feel towards other peoples' pain, even within the same familiy.
The parents, who show no real interest in the girl's predicament; ploughing the field and getting on with daily life is of much higher importance.
Or getting the preacher over to dinner to appease the Lord.
The girl on the other hand is indifferent towards her Mother's grief over losing her husband to a virus.. Seems odd to sing that bit with the current situation, to be honest..
Hard Life
I have never been to Mississippi, something that needs correcting at some point, but this song depicts the hard farming life of, perhaps, the 1930s in those hot states very well.
One might be inclined to think that the hard lives might make the indifferences understandable, however, have we changed much since?
We all have much easier lives, still we moan and groan.. Maybe that's human nature... hmmm.
Anyway, here's my (G)entry for this week..
Thanks again for listening!
Lyrics
Ode to Billy Joe - Bobbie Gentry
It was the third of June, another sleepy, dusty Delta day
I was out choppin' cotton, and my brother was balin' hay
And at dinner time we stopped and walked back to the house to eat
And mama hollered out the back door, y'all, remember to wipe your feet
And then she said, I got some news this mornin' from Choctaw Ridge
Today, Billy Joe MacAllister jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge
And papa said to mama, as he passed around the blackeyed peas
Well, Billy Joe never had a lick of sense; pass the biscuits, please
There's five more acres in the lower forty I've got to plow
And mama said it was shame about Billy Joe, anyhow
Seems like nothin' ever comes to no good up on Choctaw Ridge
And now Billy Joe MacAllister's jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge
And brother said he recollected when he, and Tom, and Billy Joe
Put a frog down my back at the Carroll County picture show
And wasn't I talkin' to him after church last Sunday night?
I'll have another piece-a apple pie; you know, it don't seem right
I saw him at the sawmill yesterday on Choctaw Ridge
And now ya tell me Billy Joe's jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge
And mama said to me, child, what's happened to your appetite?
I've been cookin' all morning, and you haven't touched a single bite
That nice young preacher, Brother Taylor, dropped by today
Said he'd be pleased to have dinner on Sunday, oh, by the way
He said he saw a girl that looked a lot like you up on Choctaw Ridge
And she and Billy Joe was throwing somethin' off the Tallahatchie Bridge
A year has come and gone since we heard the news 'bout Billy Joe
And brother married Becky Thompson; they bought a store in Tupelo
There was a virus going 'round; papa caught it, and he died last spring
And now mama doesn't seem to want to do much of anything
And me, I spend a lot of time pickin' flowers up on Choctaw Ridge
And drop them into the muddy water off the Tallahatchie Bridge

Yes, it is rather long for sure, but quite good to remember because of the story..

Your Guitaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrr 😍 is the same model that the great Dave Grohl (one of my rock heroes) of Foo Fighters used at some point, I don't know if you know them but they are rock legends, unfortunately their drummer died recently here in Colombia!!!!

Hey, thank you, dear friend!
No, I don't know him, but I've got a program lined up to watch about the Foo Fighters, so that makes it even more special to know this! 🙏👏
I must admit that I don't know a great deal technically about guitars, I just play them; I'm forever struggling with those buttons... 😄
I treated myself last Christmas and liked the colour... 😂
But I'm very glad you approve that I made the right choice!! That makes me very happy! 😃😍
