Using Used Water Gallons To Plant Red Long Beans
As someone who loves vegetables, I am currently trying my best to produce organic vegetables in my garden in my yard. I utilize the terrace and also the space on the side of the house for gardening.
There are vegetables that I plant in raised beds, there are vegetables that I plant in containers, and now I am starting to plant using used water gallons.
Why Used Gallons?
Indonesia is different from most countries in terms of the quality of clean water. So, in Indonesia, we cannot drink water directly from the tap.
Because of that, I often buy drinking water using large gallons like that. Only sometimes, when I don't have time to boil drinking water because it takes several times to boil the water to be ready to drink. Buying water with a certain brand really helps me save time, especially for people who have poor water quality from wells directly.
I have several used water gallons that I don't throw away. So, now I am using them to plant long beans.
The type of long bean that I planted is red long beans. I bought red long bean seeds through an online shop. Actually, this is my first time planting red long beans.
It takes 45-50 days to start harvesting red long beans. I will share the method from the beginning steps to harvest.
Seed Sowing
I did not use a seedling tray. I directly planted the red long bean seeds in the used gallons. For the planting medium, I used a mixture of soil, rice husks, and manure, with a ratio of 2:1:1.
I made a planting area on both sides of the gallon. Also, don't forget to make holes in the bottom and the right and left sides of the gallon for good water circulation.
Put in two red long bean seeds per side. If later some don't grow, we can add more red long bean seeds.
Five days after planting, the red long beans started to grow bigger. Here, I also started making plant supports from bamboo and white thread.
Caring for Red Long Beans Organically
I do not use any chemical pesticides or chemical fertilizers at all for caring for red long beans. To prevent pests, you can use onion skin-soaking water.
At the age of 20 days, the red long bean plants start to grow thick. Don't forget to direct the tips of the plant shoots to the plant supports so that the plants become neater.
First Fertilization
At the age of 30 days after planting, I started to fertilize the red long bean plants organically.
I use compost to fertilize the plants. If you want it to be better, you can use manure.
At the age of 40 days, the red long bean plants have started to produce flowers. And at the age of 50 days, there are red long beans ready to be harvested! Yeay!
Harvest Time
We can harvest red long beans every two to three days since the first harvest. This is because the red long beans on each plant have different sizes and lengths.
I am so happy! Planting in used water gallons can be this much fun! Look at the harvest!
Video Instruction
I have also uploaded a long video on YouTube channel for how to grow red long beans from start to harvest. You can click on the subtitles with several language options on the text.
I hope you enjoy my gardening activities this time. See you around!

Beautiful garden and very creative too. I love how your sweet little cat helps you out in the garden!!
Thanks, dear 😊
Sorry can't help it but to notice the Kuching very comel 🤣
Hehehhee yeah she is very comel! That's why I put her in my video 😊
That is such a genius idea! Not only you can plant them but you can also put the support poles directly at the center and the gallon holds them too. You’re doing a really great job with gardening :D
Yeah, for vines plants, I have no cut the top of the gallon all area. So it can be easier to put plant stakes in the center 😊
With those water galloons, the plants you planted on the side looks clean and organized. This kind of plastic galloon is kinda useful too if we'll put it into good use rather than throwing them away no. Hehe. Mother also used that, sometimes even a small bottle. But they are upgraded now, and we're now using a proper plant pot ┏(^0^)┛.
I also using plastic cup
So many plastic container here. So, it will be great if we can recyle them to grow plants 😊
Yep, have you tried those colored plastic bottle? I think they will make our garden looks livelier with their bright color. Hehe. I saw some here in our town. Using those kind.
Creative and resourceful.. my mom uses plastic bottles too in making pots for her plants...

I also use small plastic cup 😊❤️
that's cute 😃
Wow your plans looks good even the soil looks rich from the pics!
Thank you 😊 I mixed the soil with burned husk and manure 😊
Here on my country, it was also known as sitaw, it was usually mixed on vegetables soup specially sinigang which is a famous delicacy here on Philippines. Among all vegetables, beans are easy to plant and had short time span to harvest it. It's a creative way to use plastic gallons to plant red string beans since it not only saves space but also helps mother earth.
Your ways of taking care the beans are also organic and excellent since it not only preventing the insects from infecting the plant but also can ensure that the vegetables was clean and organic.
Indeed, long beans type is easy to take care. 😊
Great post! I love the idea, too. Your garden is so very neat and clean! I'd love to know more about your compost - do you buy it, or have a method that you use to produce it?
For now, I still buy compost but also making compost in low progress. With organic "trash" from kitchen. Because I have many plants in my garden then I still need to buy compost
I will share compost method for sure in the future 😊
Thank you! I've tried a few methods, but I simply cannot make enough compost/dirt, and have to buy every spring. I do not know where all that dirt goes!
When you have many dried leaves it will be great.
First layer, add a little compost, next layer, add some stuffs from kitchen (fruit skins, vegetable scraps) but no animal stuffs only plant based, then add compost a little. Then you will have more compost. If you want to faster results about a month, you have to EM4 bacteria. spray EM4 once you add layered from kitchen stuffs.
I can only congratulate you. I have seen this and similar things on the internet but never tried it myself, and you are doing it very successfully. The fertilizer will also help you a lot. Aleyküm Selam from Türkiye 👋
Needed more time and decicated for sure. No problem if you still did not for yourself, because garden more more difficult than having pets ehehe.
That might be right. Maybe we should ask a person who take cares of both 😂
You achieve what you set out to do with dedication and love for your plants. I also see that you are always accompanied by your kitty. They look beautiful those beans many congratulations dear @anggreklestari. Bonito domingo.🥰
Thank you dear ❤️
Very powerful set up. That's fascinating to harvest after 50 days!
Yeah, garden stuff always amazed me! Thank you
Wow I have seen all this things for the first time thanks for sharing and after this plants looks very healthy and Rich in soil..! I am grateful to see this type of content
When the soil is rich, we dont need to give them chemical fertilizer 😊
Beans are my favorite crop to grow. I remember when I first tried cultivating this variety! It is great fun and makes for an even more versatile vegetable!
Yeah! So fun. We can harvest them over and over again
I will try to remember about this. I am very curious as to the level of success with your 1 gal size containers. I am always experimenting with ideal size containers for beans. And while bigger pots are always better, space and convenience need to be considered! So there is a need to discover what is the smallest possible size while still being spacious enough so that the roots do not overcrowd.
At first I thought your gallon jugs were much too big but long beans are pole-type beans, aren't they‽ More foliage needs more water which need more roots.

From my experience, pak choy, broccoli, also cauliflowers needed more big spaces. especially tomato and chili plants. But the long bean type is no need to big container
