Designing My New Minimalist Work Desk Using Granite Material

Granite material which offers long-term use resistance, also has a classy and luxurious aesthetic function.

New year. I like starting a new year with new investments to build my work even better. The works that I share are of course closely related to the work table. That's why, I'm thinking about a new table. Also, in the new workspace.

In this blog, I will share with you the process of getting a new work desk that I designed myself. This work table is made with granite material on the top. Meanwhile, the table legs use iron.

The changes I made were not just about luxurious and classy visual reasons. There is something more important, namely the value of a longer usage time. It is annoying to see that a workbench has drastically reduced in quality after several years of use.

MY OLD WORK DESK

Before I take you to my new work desk, I will show you my old work desk. So, you will see the difference clearly later.

In June 2021, I bought a work desk and chair. you can read my old post. A work desk with a surface that looks like wood. But the material is soft board. I bought this type of table with this material because I had no other choice even though I had gone around to various shops in my city. Maybe at that time, it was popular with materials like that. So, I can't blame them.

I know, soft board material won't last long. But I don't think it will be as soon as two years. Turns out I was wrong.

In just two years, my desk has fallen into disrepair. Even though it is not completely damaged and can still be used now. The surface of the table has holes. Oh, poor thing. It looks really ugly.

I spent around $178 on the table and chairs. I think it's standard. Although I was quite disappointed with that table. So, learning from that experience, I finally designed my own work desk for longer use.

BUYING GRANITE

For the reasons I mentioned earlier, I decided to make a table from granite. Well, I have an uncle, an iron craftsman. I will use his services to make the table legs.

The first thing I had to do was buy the granite for the table I wanted. I also went to a ceramic shop in downtown Medan, which is 25 km from my house.

We can look together at this place looking fancy! With various collections of ceramics and granite that amaze the eye. Apart from ceramics and granite, of course, there are other building materials such as PVC panels for walls, or for roofs and more.

Being in this shop, I feel like I want to continue upgrading my house. In fact, my wallet hasn't been upgraded yet. Lol. I love being among the granite that sparkles in the light.

I went to granite with dimensions of 120x60 cm. One thing we must always remember if we want to shop for ceramics or granite. Make sure we know what color or pattern we want to use. It will save time and also save us money.

I focused on looking for granite that was white and had a black pattern. After seeing some white granite, I asked the waiter to put the granite on the table. I wanted to see if the granite would fit what I wanted.

Actually, I only want to buy one granite. But it turns out that can't be done. Per the color and pattern package, there are 2-3 pieces of granite. In the end, I had to buy it.

I also have 2 pieces of granite. Starting from wanting to have just 1 work desk, in the end, I will make 2 desks. 1 table for the kitchen table, and another table for my work table. I don't lose at all because I will use both tables completely.

For the two pieces of granite, or one package, I paid $24. I am satisfied with what I buy because it suits my wishes.

PROGGESING

Next step, I took the two pieces of granite to my uncle's house. I surrendered it to him. I have also provided examples of design drawings so that he has a clear idea of the style of the table I want.

This is what the table originally looked like, made of unpainted iron. I request the height of the table is 75 cm. After that, the table frame was painted white according to my request.

For 2 table frames, I paid $54. kkk. So, for the total $54 + $24 = $78 for two granite tables.

THE RESULTS

I am very grateful. Finally, at the beginning of this new year, I have a new table. Also, moving to a new workspace after I renovated my house. Well, last year, I also renovated a lot of my house because it was damaged.

With a minimalist concept, I like tables with this granite material. No storage space below. I don't want to end up storing a lot of things in the desk storage space. So, I decided to make a table with a shape that was as minimalist as possible.

At the bottom of the table legs, anti-scratch is placed to protect the floor from sharp scratches from the metal. Meanwhile, the corners of the table have been made blunt.

The interesting thing is, that we can remove the granite on the top of the table if one day we want to replace it with granite with a different design. Basically, granite is only placed in an iron frame that has been made and colored. The model is quite simple and efficient.

MY OLD CHAIR

Regarding chairs, I am still loyal to using my old work chair. I don't mind at all. The most important thing is that I am still comfortable using the chair for work.

This chair has a rotating feature and can be raised and lowered as desired. Really still comfortable to this day.

We can see that the leather of the chair is peeling off little by little. The plan is that one day, I will replace the leather of this chair with white.

MY NEW WORK SPACE

Actually, I use part of the living room as my workspace. This is because I want to get natural light directly from the sun. While in another room, I couldn't get enough direct sunlight. So, I decided to move.

I painted the walls white. For the roof, I used PVC material which I designed in two layers. The first layer uses white while the next layer uses brown, similar to the texture of wood.

Overall, the start of the year is full of gratitude because I have a comfortable workspace. I hope that many beautiful works of mine will be born that will inspire many people. See you, Hive People!
