Corona Extra - sand sculpture

avatar

Following on from my last post , here is the second in a series I did for Corona Extra. Don't worry it was a series of two so this will be the last of it. This time they wanted me to make a sand sculpture from the same design I used before in ice, this would last longer. It was in an area of a nightclub called Whites which looked like a shop window display.

Every job is a challenge, and that's the way I likes it!

I spent a day and a half making it. As a location, it was pretty difficult and I felt like I was playing a game of Twister as I tried to contort myself into pretzels to different parts of the sculpture for carving but, first I had to compact the thing.

Bicram compacting

I was limited with how much weight the raised floor would take and even though one of the back panels was removable it was a pain to get the sand in and compact it into a form. I also had to use a very limited amount of water, I didn't want to be flooding the nightclub floor. It was so hot in there with all the lights and the sweat from my rippling muscles was dripping into the mold, that was nearly enough. I finally got it done and retired for the evening to let it settle.

In and out like a ninja

The next day I in went and carved most of the thing while lying on my side. I felt like fish in an aquarium. It was a difficult thing to do especially not being able to step back without walking through several rooms to get to the corridor where I took these pictures from.

All my complaining aside I was happy with the result. As a finishing touch, I used a large spoon to create circular ripples in the loose sand around the base. This sand looks much lighter but it is only because it had dried out and the sculpture itself was still a bit damp. The buckets of beer bottles will give you an idea of scale, there was no pretty girl this time to pose for me. boohoo!

I finished just in time for the revellers to arrive and I snooked out the fire escape like I was never even there.

Ps

Thanks for reading. I use PeakD to document my work as an ephemeral Sculptor of sand, snow and ice, amongst other things. This will hopefully give it a new life on the Hive Blockchain. Below you will find some of my recent posts.

The having to go through several rooms just to make sure it looked alright would have done my meagre brain in XD

This is a pretty cool version of it too, looks like a beach party now which I assume was the intention :)

Thank you again. Every sculpture I make I try to think of what's happening around it. It leads to better photos which is what my work ends up as.
