Church with a history of thousand years
Beromünster is located above the Baldegger and Sempacher lakes in canton of Lucerne, one of the oldest known book printing in Switzerland dates back to 1470. Here are a few pictures inside as well as around the church of St. Michael, the early Romanesque three-aisled basilica from 1034/36 has been preserved in its basic features until today.
For over 500 years until today, uniformed Swiss Guards have been willing to lay down their lives to save that of the Pontiff. The Pontifical Swiss Guard is the only remaining armed military corps of the Pontiff, and each year on May 6, the new guardsmen of the Swiss Guard are officially sworn in in Rome. The guardsmen come mainly from the cantons of Valais, Lucerne and St. Gallen, as well as from Western Switzerland and Ticino. Many of them are also from Beromünster, it has a long tradition in this area.
