Discovering Noto: A Journey Through Baroque Beauty and Sicilian Delights
Hello everyone,
Recently, I’ve been a bit absent, but as I mentioned in a previous post, after moving to Bologna for university, I also had to find a job to support myself, because unfortunately, rents have become quite expensive lately in Bologna, but we could say this is the case almost all over Italy.
I wanted to continue my storytelling about my vacation in Sicily, and today I wanted to share with you some photos I took this past summer when I visited, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful cities in all of Sicily: Noto!
When I return to Sicily, which unfortunately happens only a few times a year now due to the fact that flights are quite expensive, I always make a point of visiting the city of Noto. It is located in the province of Syracuse and is known as the city of Baroque architecture—in fact, it became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2002.
Lately, it’s been quite chaotic to reach this place because, from a tourist perspective, more and more people are coming to visit. However, I really love it because I’m a fan of Baroque architecture, and also because I’ve always seen the city, even now as you can see from the photos, as always perfectly tidy, well-maintained, especially compared to other cities that are a bit more neglected, like Catania.
Often, when I talk to some students from Bologna or people living in northern Italy, they mention that Noto was entirely rebuilt after the earthquake of 1693. That’s why it became the home of Baroque, because that architectural style was very popular at the time, and the architects of that era decided to create a beautiful, harmonious city with these stunning palaces and beautiful churches.
Naturally, yes, I’m an art and architecture lover, but I’m also always hungry, and coming to Noto is also an opportunity to enjoy the amazing gelato they make here in a truly divine way.
Unfortunately, the downside of returning from Sicily is that I always gain a few extra kilos, because it’s practically impossible to resist the delicacies of this region.
I’ve never had the chance to visit Noto during the famous "Infiorata," an event held every year in May, where the city is decorated with artworks made from flowers, making the city even more picturesque and beautiful.
I hope the photos I’ve shared have, in some way, helped you appreciate this city, but I’m almost certain that many of you have already been here, and your heart has surely been captured by the beauty of this city!
See you soon!
