Strolling through Padua - Padova - Discovering Italy with alequandro!

Hello everyone! Today I'll tell you about the time I decided to change and instead of taking an excursion into nature, I plunged into a city of art, to be precise Padua!

Ciao a tutti! Oggi vi racconto di quella volta che ho deciso di cambiare e invece di fare un'escursione nella natura, mi sono tuffato in una città d'arte, per la precisione Padova!

I parked near Prato della Valle, the largest square in Padua and the fifth largest square in Europe.

Ho parcheggiato vicino a Prato della Valle, la più grande piazza di Padova e la quinta piazza più grande d'europa.

The square is characterized by a central elliptical island of about 20,000 square meters surrounded by a canal on whose banks there is a double ring of statues, the external circumference is 1450 meters!

To make everything even more special was the light that at that moment seemed to simulate the sunset.

Then I decided to walk towards the center of Padua and make a stop at the Basilica of Sant'Antonio di Padova.

There it is the basilica, it is always an impact to see it.

I walked a bit outside to appreciate all the details of that architecture that was also shaped by the great Michelangelo Buonarroti.

Ho camminato un po' all'esterno per apprezzare tutti i dettagli di quell'architettura che è stata plasmata anche dal grande Michelangelo Buonarroti.

A few meters from the basilica there is another important work of art: the equestrian monument to Gattamelata, entirely in bronze, made by Donatello.
It is the first large-sized equestrian statue cast since ancient times, measuring 340x390 cm, with the base plinth of 780x410 cm.

A pochi metri dalla basilica c'è un'altra opera d'arte importante: il monumento equestre al Gattamelata, interamente in bronzo, realizzata da Donatello.
Si tratta della prima statua equestre di grandi dimensioni fusa dai tempi dell'antichità, misura 340x390 cm, con lo zoccolo di base di 780x410 cm.

Then I decided to enter the basilica and unfortunately I was unable to visit it freely because there was a religious service in progress.

Poi ho deciso di entrare nell basilica e purtroppo non sono riuscito a visitarla liberamente perchè c'era una funzione religiosa in corso.

When I visit such complex and rich architectures, I always think that a month locked inside would not be enough to grasp all the details and meanings of the works present.

Quando visito architetture così complesse e ricche, penso sempre che non basterebbe un mese rinchiuso dentro per cogliere tutti i dettagli e significati delle opere presenti.

Noteworthy is the chapel of the arc, with the tomb of the saint. In the chapel the artistic level of the works present is very high.

Degna di nota è la cappella dell'arca, con la tomba del santo. Nella cappella il livello artistico delle opere presenti, è altissimo.

The sculptural cycle deserves a dedicated visit.

Continuing with the visit of the basilica, in line with and diametrically opposite the entrance, there is the chapel of the relics, with the remains of the saint.

I did not go in to visit it.
I limited myself to taking pictures from the outside.

Proseguendo con la visita della basilica, in asse con e diametralmente opposta all'ingresso, c'è la cappella delle reliquie, con i resti del santo.

Non sono entrato a visitarla.
Mi sono limitato a fare foto dall'esterno.

Then I followed the obligatory path and left the side cloister.

Poi ho seguito il percorso obbligato e sono uscito dal chiostro laterale.

Once I got out I decided to go to the main street, more touristic and full of interesting monuments. I walked towards Via Roma and then I continued to reach Palazzo Bo, the main seat of the university.

Una volta uscito ho deciso di andare nella via principale, più turistica e ricca di monumenti interessanti cosa ho camminato verso via Roma e poi ho proseguito per raggiungere palazzo Bo, principale sede dell'università.

Galileo Galilei taught at this university for 16 years and here the first woman in the world graduated.

In questa università ha insegnato per 16 anni Galileo Galilei e qui si è laureata la prima donna al mondo.

In this university there is the oldest anatomical theater in the world.

It was late for a guided tour but I promised myself to visit the inside because I know it is very interesting.

Era tardi per fare uan visita guidata ma mi sono promesso di visitare l'interno perchè so che è interessantissimo.

Once I left, I strolled, pausing to admire the facades of the buildings that embellish the experience and give the idea of ​​a living city that is culturally alive.

Una volta uscito ho passeggiato soffermandomi ad ammirare le facciate dei palazzi che impreziosiscono l'esperienza a danno l'idea di una città viva culturalmente viva.

This instead is the entrance to the famous Pedrocchi café, which until 1916 was open day and night.
For over a century it has been a prestigious meeting point frequented by intellectuals, students, academics and politicians.

Per oltre un secolo è stato un prestigioso punto d'incontro frequentato da intellettuali, studenti, accademici e uomini politici.

A few minutes and I was already in Piazza delle Erbe, with the imposing palace of reason which almost entirely occupies the long side of the square.

Qualche minuto e già mi trovavo in Piazza delle Erbe, con l'imponente palazzo della ragione che occupa quasi per intero il lato lungo della piazza.

The palace was the ancient seat of the city courts and the covered market of Padua. It was built starting from 1218 and raised in 1306 by Giovanni degli Eremitani who gave it the characteristic roof in the shape of an overturned ship's hull. The upper floor is occupied by the largest hanging room in the world, called the "Salone" (it measures 81 meters by 27 and has a height of 27 meters) with a wooden ceiling in the shape of a ship's hull. The lower floor, under the Hall, hosts the historic covered market of the city. The palace was included this year by UNESCO among the world heritage of humanity.

Il palazzo era l'antica sede dei tribunali cittadini e del mercato coperto di Padova. Fu eretto a partire dal 1218 e sopraelevato nel 1306 da Giovanni degli Eremitani che gli diede la caratteristica copertura a forma di carena di nave rovesciata. Il piano superiore è occupato dalla più grande sala pensile del mondo, detto "Salone" (misura 81 metri per 27 ed ha un'altezza di 27 metri) con soffitto ligneo a carena di nave. Il piano inferiore, sotto il Salone ospita invece lo storico mercato coperto della città. Il palazzo è stato incluso quest'anno dall'UNESCO tra i patrimoni mondiali dell'umanità.

By now it was late, so calmly, always with my eyes busy observing the beauties of Padua, I went back to the car.

Ormai era tardi, così con calma, sempre con gli occhi impegnati a osservare le bellezze di Padova sono ritornato verso l'auto.

To return to the parking lot, I decided to go through the center of Prato della Valle and I must say that it is really nice to walk in such an elegant and stately environment.

Per tornare al parcheggio ho deciso di passare per il centro di Prato della Valle e devo dire che è proprio bello passeggiare in un ambiente così elegante e signorile.

I hope you enjoyed this walk through Padua. I will definitely be back because I have not been able to visit any of the interiors of the buildings. I will definitely make a visit dedicated to the purpose.
