Promontory - Promontório de Sagres | Travel through Portugal
Hi everyone :)
Still at the Sagres promontory, beyond the built-up area, there is an open field that gives access to the imposing cliffs.
From there, we have a privileged view over Cabo de São Vicente.
On these two points, there is still a doubt about which one was considered a sacred promontory, as the region between the two has been used for religious purposes since the Neolithic era, whose evidence is still visible today in the form of several menhirs scattered across the region.
It was still close to the Sagres promontory that the vessels used to take shelter, waiting for favorable conditions, before advancing along Cabo de São Vicente, as there the ocean currents were and are more intense and the danger of being swept towards the rocky coast was bigger.
But these are historical notes that we can only try to imagine, because nowadays most of the maritime movement that is manifested there are the small boats of fishermen and adventurers, fans of water sports, as you can see in some photographs that i had the opportunity to take.
At a certain point, that solitary adventurer fell off the board and let the sail capsize.
I stayed there for a few seconds, which seemed like minutes, peeking through the camera lens, trying to figure out if it was necessary to call a rescue team, but apparently it's something that happens frequently around those parts, as the boy got away on his own and there continued to count some nautical miles :P
This area, which i initially identified as an open field, is part of the Natural Park of Southwest Alentejo and Costa Vicentina, preserving the natural heritage of the coast, which includes some species of birds that are very representative of the region.
Along the way to the coast, we pass by several exhibitors that are spread throughout the enclosure and where the type and some details about the species that move there are described.
At first, everything seemed a little empty of animal life, in addition to the number of people walking around, but with more attention, it was soon possible to visualize the first species of bird, kind of camouflaged in the middle of the low vegetation.
If i hadn't been having so much wind directly in my ears, maybe it would have been possible to detect the passing right away, but it was impossible to hear much beyond the wind.
In the end it was a very rich visual experience, as i was able to capture several species in their natural habitat.
After taking some pictures right at the most pointed tip of Portugal :P at the Cabo Sagres Viewpoint, it was on the way back towards the fortress that i was pleasantly surprised by something that already existed in that place the last time i visited it, but for some reason that i don't remember, it went completely unnoticed, maybe it was closed to the public or something like that, because today i can identify some platforms and fences that used to not exist.
This time it was impossible to go unnoticed, as in the distance it was already possible to see that construction in contrast to the surroundings, and it was this same construction that led me to a platform to try to understand what i had just experienced.
There is a small installation called "A Voz do Mar" (the voice of the sea), which boils down to a kind of circular labyrinth that leads us to the center where we can climb a metal railing that separates us from a dark abyss.
Arriving there, at first i didn't understand what it was, but i suspected that it would have some purpose, some functionality and it was then that without any warning i was hit by a heavy breath and an impactful roar coming from the center of the earth beneath my feet.
What is happening there is really powerful, feeling all that explosion that makes the smallest hairs stand on end.
What happens is that there are huge caves in the cliffs below, where the sea enters and pushes the air that escapes through these small cracks on the surface.
On one of the platforms they built there, it was possible to see a huge fissure that gave access to one of these caves, it is indeed extraordinary.
And of course, we couldn't turn our backs without first making a brief visit to the old Farol da Ponta de Sagres, the first provisional installation having been made in 1894 and only later inaugurated in 1960 the current tower, no longer so old :)
Well, i think that's all for today, i hope you've followed me around and above all that you've enjoyed it :)
