Fortress - Ponta de Sagres | Travel through Portugal
Hi everyone :)
We went to visit Ponta de Sagres, a historic place in the extreme southwest of Portugal, the southernmost point in Portugal, and in Europe, an index finger pointing to the Atlantic Ocean.
In the past it was also known as the “end of the known world” because whoever was on this side of the ocean was unaware of what was beyond that piece of land pointing to the horizon.
But this time we went with the youngest member of the family, who learned a little more about the history of the country where she lives.
It's always good to be able to tell some important stories, having the possibility to be in the place where they unfolded :)
For some reason, this is one of the most important tourist attractions in Portugal, combining the rich historical heritage with breathtaking landscapes and a vast number of beautiful beaches that form between the cutouts of the huge cliffs along the coast.
Sagres belongs to the municipality of Vila do Bispo in the Algarve region, this region is so well known by foreigners :)
Those who arrive there immediately realize the huge influx of the most varied nationalities that go there, counting on the license plates of the motorhomes parked outside and the number of stickers that they stick on the various lamp posts that are found in the outer enclosure.
For a moment it reminded me of those trends of tourists who travel to a certain place and leave their mark, like that famous bridge in Paris where tourists put a padlock, in Sagres they put a sticker :P
The history of this place, as it is told, begins in the 15th century, with the "Navigator" Infante D. Henrique, when he decided to create a navigation school to teach those who would become the leading Portuguese navigators in various maritime expeditions, and it was here that the best navigators and cartographers of the time received their training.
Knowing the facts that followed, the importance of this place in the course of world history is irrefutable.
Later, around the 17th century, the Fortress of Sagres was built, practically on the edge of this huge, steep cliff buffeted by the winds, and when i say buffeted, i mean literally, it is extremely unlikely to come to this place and not be bombarded by a continuous wind that does not leave us, although it is milder near the fortress, intensifying as we advance towards the cliff, a place that i will cover in another article.
But returning to the fortress, it is one of the greatest monuments in this region, with its high walls, which can still be seen and in good condition and equipped with several cannons to protect the Portuguese coast from foreign invasions.
In the center, we can see the square of arms, a gigantic mariner´s compass and the church of Santa Maria.
The conversation is going on for a long time, so today i'll stop here and in a next article i'll address the less built-up area of Ponta de Sagres with some very interesting notes that passed me by the last time i visited this place.
