CULTIVANDO CIENCIA PARA COSECHAR EL FUTURO // CULTIVATING SCIENCE TO HARVEST THE FUTURE

Recientemente fui invitado, por los directivos de tres colegios ubicados en la ciudad de Cumaná, estado Sucre, Venezuela, para participar como observador en una actividad llamada “Reto Matemático”; en dicha actividad los estudiantes de distintos colegios demuestran, en una sana competencia, sus habilidades y conocimientos matemáticos en la resolución de determinados problemas.

I was recently invited by the directors of three schools located in the city of Cumaná, Sucre state, Venezuela, to participate as an observer in an activity called "Mathematical Challenge"; In this activity, students from different schools demonstrate, in healthy competition, their mathematical skills and knowledge in solving certain problems.

El propósito de esta actividad se fundamenta en tres premisas básicas: primero, reflexionar sobre conceptos matemáticos vinculados al contexto y a sus vivencias; segundo, reinvindicar la matemática como disciplina científica cuyo aprendizaje conlleva a la generación de valores que están emparentados a la formación ciudadana crítica; y tercero, que el aprendizaje de la matemática en nuestros colegios se propicie estimulado la comprensión de teorías y procedimientos mediante actividades de investigación.

The purpose of this activity is based on three basic premises: first, reflect on mathematical concepts linked to the context and their experiences; second, to vindicate mathematics as a scientific discipline whose learning leads to the generation of values that are related to critical citizen training; and third, that the learning of mathematics in our schools is fostered by stimulating the understanding of theories and procedures through research activities.

Durante el desarrollo del Reto Matemático, los estudiantes debieron resolver variedad de ejercicios, algunos de lógica, otros de aritmética, geometría, entre otros. Lo mejor fue que la actividad se desarrolló en un ambiente de compañerismo y alegría, los jóvenes expresaban en sus rostros lo mucho que disfutaban su participación, sin estrés ni preocupaciones. La satisfacción de participar y poder representar a su colegio fue para ellos el mejor premio.

During the development of the Mathematical Challenge, the students had to solve a variety of exercises, some of logic, others of arithmetic, geometry, among others. The best thing was that the activity took place in an atmosphere of companionship and joy, the young people expressed on their faces how much they enjoyed their participation, without stress or worries. The satisfaction of participating and being able to represent their school was the best prize for them.

El anhelo de los organizadores, como resultado de la actividad, es que los estudiantes adquieran las herramientas matemáticas, desde el aspecto cognitivo y ético, que los exhorte a ser buenos ciudadanos y futuros profesionales al servicio de la sociedad.

The desire of the organizers, as a result of the activity, is that the students acquire the mathematical tools, from the cognitive and ethical aspect, that encourages them to be good citizens and future professionals at the service of society.

Sin dudas, es un lohable propósito el que se desea con ese tipo de actividades, ya que el sembrar en los corazones de las futuras generaciones no solo conocimeinto científico, sino también valores cívicos y morales, despertará en ellos las ancias de superación profesional y personal pero alejados de todo pensamiento y deseo que corrompa los lazos que los mantiene unidos con sus semejantes.

Undoubtedly, it is a praiseworthy purpose that is desired with this type of activity, since planting in the hearts of future generations not only scientific knowledge, but also civic and moral values, will awaken in them the desire for professional and personal improvement. but away from all thoughts and desires that corrupt the ties that keep them united with their peers.

Son esos lazos los que les permitirán, en el futuro, crear ciudadanía, generar acciones para proteger y preservar el medio ambiente, así como generar ciencia y tecnología al servicio del bienestar de la humanidad.

These ties are what will allow them, in the future, to create citizenship, generate actions to protect and preserve the environment, as well as generate science and technology at the service of the well-being of humanity.

La invitación queda abierta para que los jóvenes aprendan la matemática para conjeturar, medir, estimar, argumentar, disfrutar y divertirse. Queda de ellos el resolver problemas para la vida que los mueva a desentrañar quiénes somos, en una sociedad que ha sido permeada por antivalores que nos distancia del humanismo.

The invitation remains open for young people to learn mathematics to conjecture, measure, estimate, argue, enjoy and have fun. It remains for them to solve problems for life that moves them to unravel who we are, in a society that has been permeated by anti-values that distance us from humanism.

Esta actividad representa una apuesta en favor de una educación crítica y reflexiva de la matemática, que esté al servicio de la sociedad, que sea útil para su crecimiento, para su transformación, en síntesis, que se yerga en humana y se constituya en un recurso para impulsar el crecimiento cultural, moral y ético de nuestros pueblos.

This activity represents a commitment in favor of a critical and reflective education of mathematics, which is at the service of society, which is useful for its growth, for its transformation, in short, which becomes human and constitutes a resource to promote the cultural, moral and ethical growth of our peoples.

Al finalizar el reto los estudiantes pudieron disfrutar de jugos, pasteles, helados, música y baile. No solo demostraron ser buenos en las matemáticas, de forma sorpresiva algunos también demostraron habilidades para el canto lo que los hizo merecedores de fuertes aplausos por parte de los presentes; todo esto para cerrar con broche de oro su maravillosa participación.

At the end of the challenge, the students were able to enjoy juices, cakes, ice cream, music and dancing. Not only did they prove to be good at math, surprisingly, some also showed singing skills, which earned them loud applause from those present; all this to close with a flourish their wonderful participation.

Todos son ganadores, triunfadores, cada uno de ellos representa el futuro que queremos cosechar.

They are all winners, achievers, each one of them represents the future we want to reap.
