REVIEW: Minari (2020) [ENG - ESP]

After seeing this film I found out that it was nominated for an Oscar for best foreign language film. Well, maybe I already knew about it but I had forgotten about it. Particularly, I can understand the reasons why that happened. Please allow me to tell you about it.

SYNOPSIS

This production follows a South Korean family who move to the southern United States from California in the 1980s. The reasons? An infatuated husband wants his children to see him succeed for once in his life, so he sets out to create a vegetable farm with Korean seeds to supply the growing market of immigrants arriving from that continent.

ORDINARY

Like most families, we don't have that many eccentric and impressive things to tell, unless you're in a family like the Kardashians, for example. So this fictionalised account of Lee Isaac Chung's (Director) memories is not meant to impress you. It seems like a gentle, well-drawn account of what some of the situations he experienced in his childhood might have looked like.

To that end, he chooses the path of well-told details, well-captured sounds and taking the time to tell you some moments from that episode of his life rather than a story with giddiness and surprise changes. Not everything has to make you laugh, not everything has to make you cry, but it seems that every scene is justified in that sequence, because it has some detail for you to include in getting to know this family from the inside.

The humour is there, and a lot of it has to do with the innocence of the children, especially David (Alan Kim), a product of his precociousness and the American stereotypes he has grown up with. Now, as he faces the stay of his 100% Asian grandmother (Youn Yuh-jung), there is a conflict in his mind about what he should and should not expect from her. But also, this elderly lady will contribute in this department in view of her peculiar personality and the language barrier.

I think the most dramatic part is played by the married couple, Jacob (Steven Jeun) and Monica (Han Ye-ri). In the trailer itself you can tell that they are a couple where things are not optimal, financially and sentimentally. Therefore, some situations test the commitment between the two of them to keep facing the problems together. The film nicely exposes the consequences of the head of the household's insistence on taking the members of his household down a path that doesn't seem the best. Obsession? Stubbornness? Fear? The restrained Asian personality may make it hard to decipher what his real motive is, but the consequences can be felt.

THE SCENE

For me, it happens the last time David and his grandmother are shown together at the creek on the property, where they talk about the minari Soon-ja has planted. By explaining it to her grandson, she is explaining it to millions of people who don't know about it (including me) and thus beginning to relate it to the film. Likewise, we may need more information than the film gives to understand why the name of the plant was chosen for the title.

MY OPINION

I did like it, and I do recommend it to those who like this genre. Of course, you have to watch it on a not so small screen to appreciate the details that go along with the family themes, such as illness, the love of family (which can be strengthened or become so fragile), the guilt of the children towards the parents, the desire to please another, among others.

The technical aspect is very well cared for. Several frames are worthy of a postcard to give to a loved one. Even in interior spaces they resort to a strategic placement of the camera to show amplitude and symmetry. The music is very delicate and in tune, helping to remind us of the culture of the protagonists.

And we come to the part where I give my opinion: the top 3 phrases. They are here because they are well designed, that make you think, that you remember as time goes by, either because they are authentic, truthful, profound, original, controversial, vile lies or because they are key to understand the movie. Here they are... BANG!

The presence of this film among the films selected by the Academy that year is completely justified. It's a production to watch on a quiet weekend, with some good snacks, like those you take in a comfortable and pleasant invitation. See you next time!

Luego de ver ésta película es que me entero de que fue nominada al Oscar como mejor película de habla extranjera. Bueno, tal vez ya lo sabía pero lo había olvidado. Particularmente, puedo entender las razones por las que eso sucedió. Por favor, permite que te lo cuente.

SINOPSIS

Ésta producción narra las vivencias de una familia surcoreana que se muda al sur de los Estados Unidos desde California en la década de 1980. ¿Las razones? Un encaprichado esposo desea que sus hijos lo vean triunfar una vez en su vida, y para ello se empeña en crear una hacienda de vegetales con semillas coreanas para abastecer al creciente mercado de inmigrantes que llegan de ese continente.

COMÚN Y CORRIENTE

Como la mayoría de las familias, no tenemos tantas cosas excéntricas ni impresionantes qué contar, a menos que estés en una familia como la de las Kardashian, por ejemplo. Así que éste relato ficcionado de los recuerdos de Lee Isaac Chung (Director) no pretende impresionarte. Parece un relato amable y bien dibujado de cómo pudo haberse visto algunas de las situaciones que vivió en su niñez.

Para ello, escoge el camino de los detalles bien contados, los sonidos bien captados y dedicarle tiempo a relatarte algunos momentos de ése episodio de su vida en vez de una historia con vértigo y cambios sorpresivos. No todo tiene que hacerte reír, no todo tiene que hacerte llorar, pero parece que cada escena está justificada en esa secuencia, porque tiene algún detalle para que lo incluyas en conocer a ésta familia desde adentro.

El humor está presente, y mucho tiene que ver con la inocencia de los niños, especialmente de David (Alan Kim), producto de su precocidad y estereotipos americanos con los que ha crecido. Ahora, al encarar la estadía de su abuela 100% asiática (Youn Yuh-jung), hay un conflicto en su mente sobre lo que debe esperar o no de ella. Pero también, ésta señora de la tercera edad aportará en éste departamento en vista de su peculiar personalidad y la barrera lingüística.

Creo que la parte más dramática la tienen la pareja de esposos, Jacob (Steven Jeun) y Mónica (Han Ye-ri). En el mismo tráiler puedes distinguir que son una pareja en el que las cosas no están óptimas, financieramente y sentimentalmente. Por eso, algunas situaciones ponen a prueba el compromiso que hay entre ambos para seguir enfrentando juntos los problemas. El film expone muy bien las consecuencias que conlleva el que el cabeza de familia insista en llevar a los miembros de su casa por un camino que no parece el mejor. ¿Obsesión? ¿Terquedad? ¿Miedo? La comedida personalidad asiática tal vez te dificulte descifrar cuál es el verdadero motivo que tiene, pero las consecuencias se pueden tocar con las manos.

LA ESCENA

Para mí, ocurre la última vez que muestran a David y su abuela juntos en el riachuelo de la propiedad, donde hablan sobre el minari que ha plantado Soon-ja. Al explicárselo a su nieto, se lo está explicando a millones de personas que no lo conocen (incluyéndome) y de esa forma empezar relacionarlo con la película. De igual forma, es posible que necesitemos más información de la que el film da para entender por qué se eligió el nombre de esa planta para el título.

MI OPINIÓN

Sí me gustó, y sí la recomiendo a aquellos que les gusta éste género. Por supuesto, tienes que verla en una pantalla no tan pequeña para apreciar los detalles que acompañan a los temas familiares, como las enfermedades, el amor a la familia (que puede fortalecerse o volverse tan frágil), la culpa de los hijos para con los padres, el deseo de agradar a otro, entre otros.

El aspecto técnico está muy bien cuidado. Varios encuadres son dignas de una postal para regalarla a un ser querido. Incluso, en espacios interiores recurren a una estratégica ubicación de la cámara para mostrar amplitud y simetría. La música es muy delicada y acorde, ayudando a recordar la cultura de los protagonistas.

Y llegamos a la parte donde doy mi opinión: el top 3 de frases. Están aquí por ser bien diseñadas, que te hacen pensar, que recuerdas al pasar el tiempo, bien sea por ser autenticas, veraces, profundas, originales, divertidas, controversiales, viles mentiras o porque son clave para entender la película. Aquí están... ¡PUM!

Está completamente justificada la presencia de éste metraje entre las seleccionadas por la Academia ése año. Es una producción para verla en un tranquilo fin de semana, con unos buenos bocadillos, como esos que tomas en una cómoda y amena invitación. ¡Hasta la próxima!
