A small falcon? || ¿Un pequeño halcón?

Taking up hiking again is bringing me several benefits. One of them is that I am getting to see and take pictures of new animals and things that I had not had the chance to see before. Today I tell you how I managed to capture what appears to be a hawk. Please join me.

This time I left in the morning hours. One of the first stretches is still close to the village, so it has roads and fences. But the fact that there are cattle in the area means that it also has a hillside appearance, with pastures at medium altitude and the odd tree to provide shade for the cattle. It is a place where the breeze can flow freely and if the sky is clear you can feel a lot of well-being.

As this stretch is not flat I usually take the time to walk at a suitable pace, depending on how I feel that day. Suddenly, I heard the sound of a bird nearby, but it didn't sound familiar. So I slowed my pace and started to look around, and as I looked up I noticed this bird that seemed to be watching me.

The sound it was making probably had more decibels than other birds in the area. I'm not sure if it was calling for help, or giving me a warning, or perhaps calling someone else. But there I stood, watching it carefully.

I liked the combination of its colours, alternating black, brown, grey and yellow, leaving the lighter colours for the lower part of its body. I was also struck by the design on its face, as it had large eyes, a beak with a rather pronounced downward point at the tip. But I concluded that it was possibly a hunting bird when I added the detail of the legs to its large eyes and beak shape. Its legs reminded me of those of an eagle, because of their texture, shape and large talons (obviously in proportion to its body, not the actual eagle's).

As I had just started the tour, I still had the camera in its case, closed, and with the short lens. So after overcoming the pessimism that I wouldn't be able to take pictures of him, I opened the case, changed the short lens for the long lens, and then set up the camera and shot - I got these beautiful pictures because he seemed to have allowed me to!

After taking my mental focus off this bird I began to notice that she wasn't making all the sounds I was hearing, there was another bird just like her in the same tree! So I picked up my camera again and took some more pictures of this one too. I was pleased with what had happened that morning. I had had this beautiful gift just at the beginning of the journey. It gave me time to continue to look at them for a while more, until I decided to go on my way.

As I went on my way I thought I had seen a sparrow hawk or something like that. But when I got home I used the Google Lens application to identify this specimen, and the result I got was "American Kestrel". Some of the items match the location and shape of the bird I saw. Well, I am happy to add one more species to my birding. I think patience and persistence is key to keep getting these results. And obviously, having the camera next to me to be able to reach them. Ésto de retomar el senderismo está trayéndome varios beneficios. Uno de ellos es que estoy logrando ver y tomarle fotos a animales y cosas nuevas, que no había tenido oportunidad anteriormente. Hoy les cuento cómo llegué a capturar lo que parece ser un halcón. Por favor, acompáñame.

Ésta vez salí en horas de la mañana. Uno de los primeros tramos aún está cerca de la población, por eso tiene carreteras y cercas. Pero el hecho de existir un ganado en la zona, hace de que también tenga un aspecto de laderas, con pastos a media altura y uno que otro árbol que da sombra a las reses. Es un lugar donde puede correr la brisa libremente y si el cielo está despejado puedes sentir mucho bienestar.

Como ese tramo no es plano suelo tomarme el tiempo para caminar a un ritmo adecuado, dependiendo de cómo me sienta ese día. De pronto, escuché cerca el sonido de un ave, pero no me parecía familiar. Así que desaceleré el paso y empecé a ver hacia todos lados, y al ver hacia arriba noté a ésta ave que parecía observarme.

El sonido que emitía probablemente tenía más decibeles que otros pájaros de la zona. No estoy seguro si estaba pidiendo ayuda, o dándome alguna advertencia, o quizás llamando a alguien más. Pero allí me quedé, observándolo con detenimiento.

Me gustó la combinación de sus colores, alternando el negro, marrón, gris y amarillo, dejando los colores más claros para la parte de abajo de su cuerpo. También me llamó la atención ese diseño en su rostro, puesto que tenía grandes ojos, un pico con la punta bastante pronunciada hacia abajo en la punta. Pero concluí de que posiblemente era un ave de cacería cuando anexé el detalle de las patas a sus grandes ojos y forma del pico. Sus patas me hacían recordar las de un águila, por su textura, forma y grandes garras (obviamente en proporción a su cuerpo, no a las que realmente tiene el águila).

Como apenas empezaba el recorrido tenía la cámara aún en su estuche, cerrado, y con el lente corto. Así que luego de vencer el pesimismo de que no lograría tomarle fotos, abrí el estuche, cambié el lente corto por el lente largo, y entonces configuré la cámara y disparé. ¡Logré éstas bellas fotos porque él parece que me lo había permitido!

Luego de quitar el foco mental sobre ésta ave empiezo a notar de que ella no estaba emitiendo todos los sonidos que estaba escuchando. ¡Había otro ejemplar igual en el mismo árbol! Así que volví a tomar mi cámara y tomé otras fotos a éste también. Estaba satisfecho por lo que había ocurrido ésa mañana. Había tenido éste bonito regalo apenas empezando la travesía. Me dió tiempo de seguir contamplándolos un rato más, hasta que decidí seguir mi camino.

Mientras seguía mi camino pensé en que había visto un gavilán o algo así. Pero al llegar a casa usé la aplicación Google Lens para realizar la identificación de éste especímen, y el resultado que obtuve fue "Cernícalo americano". Bueno, estoy contento con anexar una especie más a mi observación de aves. Creo que la paciencia y persistencia es clave para seguir obteniendo éstos resultados.
